tranny compatible?
my buddy just bought a '84 z with the 700-r4 but it only gets 1+2 gear he wants to just put a new one and and he is wondering if a turbo 350/400 will bolt right up or what will be needed becuase these are much easier to come by than 700-r4's

Yes and No. If the Turbo tranny has the same bellhousing bolt pattern it will bolt right up. There's also a BOP bellhousing but won't bolt to a Chev.
You'll need a long tailshaft TH350 to be able to reuse the 700R4's driveshaft. A short tailshaft TH350 needs the longer driveshaft out of a 82-83 that came with the TH200 tranny. The TH350 is a simple swap but you'll need to buy a TH350 tranny swap kit.
The TH400 will also fit but also needs more changes. The TH400 swap kit also includes a new crossmember but you'll have to find a TH400 slip yoke since it's larger than all the other GM trannys. A new driveshaft may be required.
