tranny trouble

I have a 87 z28 automatic w/ a 700 R4 tranny. I recently did something to it in the snow. IT shifts reverse and first gear manually on the shifter but when driving it doesnt shift out of 1st gear. Could it be a cable or does it sound like it is blown?? Also, is getting a rebuilt one if it is blown a good idea or should i just go with a new one. Any info will be apreciated thanx.........

I assume by the "I did something in the snow" that this is a sudden thing. If it was gradual I'd just say change the fluid and filter, but if it's sudden you either broke something internal or managed to overtighten the HELL out of your TV cable. Try adjusting the cable just cuz you can do it yourself in a few minutes, but I don't think that's the problem.

As far as replacing the tranny if you need to......there's nothing wrong with a rebuilt tranny as long as the rebuilder knows what he's doing. A good tranny guy will give you a warranty on his work, and the rebuilt tranny will be much cheaper.

If it will not shift out of first ever, even hard throttle, check the governor. When you pull it out there should be a little plastic gear on the bottom. the entire gov. should turn with it. This makes your trans. upshift, the t.v. controls when.
