Transmission problem, what do you think?

Transmission problem, what do you think?
A friend of mine with a 91 RS auto has a transmission problem, what do you guys think it is? Here is what he sent me:
"Today, out of the blue, the car won't go to reverse from park -- it skips the gear. I can get it into reverse, however, by moving it into drive and then pushing it back up into R.
Other symptoms include having to go down to D1 (it won't go directly into overdrive) to get the car to engage. Also, when I try to put it in park, the car seems like it's in netrual. Only after putting a bit more pressure and waiting awhile will the car go into P.
I checked the tranny fluid level and it looks fine. The car also shifted fine when Drive was engaged."
