Don't waste money on a coil, you won't get anything for the $50 or so. Invest in a dremel or a die grinder, buy some gaskets for the intake, and port the hell out of the intake manifold, and plenum. That will give you the best bang for the buck, with some time spent. If you get a die grinder, then you can port your heads too.

Or you can look for some used headers, though it may still be out of your budget.

Those would get you the most for your $100, and would put you on the road for getting more out of future mods.

porting is just a TAD bit outside of my skill level. And besides, the electrical in my car is doing all kinds of funky things, so I figure a new coil couldnt hurt with that anyway.

I'd try and get some used headers instead of a coil. Chances are the coil won't fix your problem. It's best to try and find the source of your electrical problems instead of blindly throwing stuff at it.

Hold up! You didn't mention you have electrical problems. Fix problems FIRST before doing ANY mods. Don't try to tune or modify around broken stuff. You'll chase your own tail forever.

I metion changing the coil since the stock one is usually original to the car (more than a decade old) and they CAN degrade over time even though they have no moving parts. And if you're gonna buy a replacement you might as well spend an extra $10 and upgrade slightly.

Well, they're pretty mild electrical problems. Basically:

My voltage reads low (should be like 13, it's hanging around 10-11 most of the time) most of the time. The rest of the time it jumps up and down quite a bit (visibly... if my headlights happen to be on at the time, they get brighter and dimmer as it happens). It doesnt seem to have any ill effects, it's just a nuisance. And dont worry, it is being fixed, or rather, it will be as soon as anyone figures out what it is. None of the mechanics that have looked at it really seem sure exactly what the problem is. I think it's a bad alternator, but what do I know.

Buy an air foil which in Canada is about $70 and adds anywhere from 5-10 horse and go with some K&N's

I would say that your alt is going bad and I would look into getting that fixed before any performance mods. Any parts store will check it for free. Also on the pullies note, dont bother with the 3 peice set that is really just for show. I would get the March Power and Amp series you will have no charging problems since you underdrive the crank and overdrive the alt (at least I think that is right), well at any rate you will not have charging problems. The K&N is a good upgrade as well as the coil, I personally felt seat of the pants differences. The coil was in the upper RPMs. I would also agree on the porting thing. I didnt know what the heck I was doing and I did it with no troubles at all. Very easy to take off and put on and all you have to have is a little patients to port. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Yea I was pretty sure it was the alternator, but everyone who looks at it keeps telling me it's fine. I may just swap it out anyway, so even if it still has the problem I'll at least have eliminated one of the possible causes.

the K&N filter is on the way. the coil will probably wait a week. Porting... hrmm... well, we'll see about that one

I got my airfoil in exchange for old carpet I no longer needed - it doesnt do all that much, a friend of mine got 3 rwhp when he bumped up his fuel pressure in combination with the airfoil. I woulda never paid full price for it, waste of money, but if you find one on ebay for like $20 bucks then its ok.

I gained around 25 ft lbs of torque and I forget how much hp with an exhaust cut out. I just put headers on n they're great, but no hp numbers till end of the month at dyno day

Underdrive pulleys gave me .1 off my ET so worth around 10hp.

Just put a set of C.A.T.S. 1.6 roller tipped rocker arms on buddies 86 firechiken 170 hp Ca. emmisions motor cost 75 bucks, could feel the difference.
If you have the double cartidge air box, there are baffles molded into the bottom that cause some restriction. their main reason is to keep water and slush out of your intake. you can open them up, but then you might get more moisture in the engine.
