Heh....you could do it yourself in like an hour leisurely....just gotta take off your pulleys/belts/hoses. The got a brand new Bosch water pump for like 30$ from Pep boys....came with all new gaskets and such.

It's ok, I paid 200$ (parts+labor)to have someone put in a new alternator...even though it's like, 1 belt, and 3 brackets....back then I didn't know anything....but today I'm like "I coulda done that myself and only paid 110$ for the alt and saved 90$"

I dunno....my mom paid the local dodge dealership 737$ for fluid change, new belts, and an "intake" cleaning.....she went in for an oil change....and somehow managed to pay for 737$ worth of BS....

The fact that it is your mom answers a lot of questions. A mechanic is more likely to take a woman to the cleaners than a guy who shows up with a Chilton or Haynes or a GM Service Manual in his hand.

Anyways, I don't know about his case but if they are using a GM rebuild, it tends to cost more. There is coolant involved here too. They have to scrap the old gasket off, put the new one on, fill it up and burp it and who could forget going to the crapper and coffee breaks.

I know a guy who paid 400$ to get his alternator replaced....so no, 200$ wasn't "terrible" in my case or in 89's case...but again, if you know what your doing, you can save yourself 25-50% of the cost much of the time.

With my mom it was one of those deals where it went in for it's scheduled oil change, and she got a call a few hours after dropping it off that it needed some "maintance" work. 2 days later she got her car back with a 737$ bill.

They charged her 120$ parts/labor for a "throttle body cleaning" I doubt they even took the TB off, they probably just sprayed/washed it. They charged her 70$ for new belts, and 125$ labor, her Intrepid has 38, on it....I didn't see the belts, but my guess is they had 1 little sign of wear and decided to replace them. The oil/trans change was like 95$ total, which isn't bad, but she coulda bought me some burger king and i woulda changed it for her at cost...just a bunch of BS stuff, like 250$ to have "buildup" cleaned off her valves.....the car ran perfect before it went in for the oil change. My mom was also foolish enough to tell them that her service engine light came on once a month back, then went off and never came back on. They happily charged her 120$ to "reset" her computer, mind you they didnt' fix anything, they reset it. Just annoys me....she gives me hell for spending all my money to build my 350....then has the nerve to come back from picking up her car and hand me the recipt saying "your in the wrong profession" since the bill was so high....it was the most ridiculous bill i had ever seen, i laughed at almost everything they charged her for.
