Re: weird idle.... 86 camaro
Sounds like a real nasty vacuum leak to me, like maybe an unhooked brake booster hose or PCV hose. There's not much else that'll make an EFI car idle that high (other than putting a brick on the gas pedal.)
A bad vac. leak will also cause the car to run lean, which can lead to overheating. Fix the RPM issue first, then sort out the temp. problem.

86 camaro? efi?
is this car fuel injected?
if so check the idle air control valve
if its carburated, check the fst idle cam on your rochester qudrajet, but even then i cant imagine 4000 rpms
the 86 camaro had 5 engine options
a 2.5l inline 4 throttle body injection
a2.8 v6 multiport fuel injection
305 v8 quadrajet carb
305 ho v8 quadrajet carb and finally
305 v8 tuned port injection
so the more info u can give us the better

2.8 MPFI
5.0 carb
5.0 carb HO
5.0 TPI
5.7 TPI (in a small number of IROCs)
But we do still need more info.....

Re: weird idle.... 86 camaro
the 86 camaro was offered with a 4banger, though very rare
and i dont believe the 5.7 was offered this year, i'll check my information again, its pretty reliable but i could easily have misread

My car does the exact same thing. It's an '88 with the 2.8 MPFI, and when it's running, it idles straight up to 4000 and stays there. I'm wondering if maybe something killed the computer (the car has been sitting since '93), since my check engine light comes on immediately during startup. I haven't found any vacuum leaks or anything unplugged.

use a paper clip to connect the 2 top right spaces in the ALDL connector and see what she reads and let us know.

Re: weird idle.... 86 camaro
That's a pretty good sign, although a loose ground or wire to the ALDL or the ECM itself could cause the same problem. Check your grounds and fuses before you condemn the ECM.

Re: weird idle.... 86 camaro
Carbed, fuel injected, doesn't matter. A bad ECM will not cause an engine to run at 4000rpm with the throttle closed. You need air, and a lot of it to spin even a V6 at 4000rpm.
Camaro_Boy, don't bother inspecting any of the small vacuum hoses for leaks, or worrying about the choke. Chances are you've got a completely disconnected hose somewhere, and a large one at that. Another common culprit would be a leak at the carb base. A deteriorated carb base gasket, loose or overtorqued carb bolts, or a combination of any would cause this.
