No they weren't. They are called 4L60s starting in '93 with the 4th gen cars.

Here is the RPO code that is in my '92:

MD8 : TRANSMISSION, AUTO 4 SPD, THM 700 R4

The RPO code for the 4L60s is diffrent.

no, 4L60 was correct for 92 and up to 93. In 94 they were called 4L60E

Beginning in 1991 GM changed all of its automatic transmission designations. The TH700-R4 became the 4L60. The newer names were essentially a code for determining the transmission. The 4 meant 4 forward gears. The L meant it was a longitudinally mounted trans, aka rear wheel/4 wheel drive. The last two 2 numbers designated the duty rating, or strength of the trans. The higher the number the stronger the trans.

So GM called the 700 a TH700-R4 until 1990. GM then called them 4L60s. So technically the 91-93 units never were called TH700-R4, even though the are the same transmission.

On a side note, nearly all auto manufacturers have done the same thing. All in the early to mid 90s too.

Marc has it straight on this one. The reason for the way the RPO reads is simple: GM didn't want to mess with changing it for just 1-2 production years.....the 4th gen redesign was already in the works.

Re: what was the tranny called in the 92 camaro's?

Hmm, here's my RPO code in my 93 z28

"MD8", which according to fbodmotorsports.com, is the code for "THM 700 R4 auto tranny".

I have the 3.23 gear ratio option as well, don't know if that makes a difference or not.

Also, in the 93, it seems like I have the older, yellowish gauges from the 3rd Gen's.

Again, I am new to Camaros, but maybe 93 still had some of the same parts/RPO codes as the older Fbodys?

Re: what was the tranny called in the 92 camaro's?

You have a 700R4, but since your car is a 93, it's designated 4L60. Basically, a 4L60 is a 700R4, just with a different name. GM put 700R4s in vehicles from 1984 or so, till 1993. They just changed the name, in 1991, to 4L60. Does that answer your question?

Yea, in a lot of ways the '93 F-bodies were like a 3rd gen with updated skin.
