Beginning in 1991 GM changed all of its automatic transmission designations. The TH700-R4 became the 4L60. The newer names were essentially a code for determining the transmission. The 4 meant 4 forward gears. The L meant it was a longitudinally mounted trans, aka rear wheel/4 wheel drive. The last two 2 numbers designated the duty rating, or strength of the trans. FINALLY someone else that understands...man. I always get so much crap from people..."no jackass my third gen has a 700r4 not a 4L60...those are the ones that the fourth gens have...." I get that all the time.....

Well yah! They're both Camaro's, they both are front engine rear wheel drive, they're both built by GM. I quess that's several ways.
