Angry Why does his car sound better than mine?

My friend (until he bought a Mustang) owns a '92 Mustang LX 5.0. Basically stock with 40-series flowmasters. All legal, no engine mods, both cats, all of it. I have an '89 RS 5.0, stock except for a 3" exhaust and 40-series FlowMaster. Both cars side-by-side, it's no comparison - the freakin' 'stang sound WAY better. I know the single-exhaust and stock, gutless 305TBI hurts it, but is there any way to make the ol'e RS sound better? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

None of them ACTUALLY sound good. It's actually just a lot of resonance coming from typical stock cars. The Mustang just has more. I'm sure Flowmaster had the mustang engine perfectly matched to a set of 40 series flows

If you wanna be a bad ***, you run a bad *** 383 with 12:1 compression, a .600" lift cam with around 250 degrees of duration, 110 lobe sep, some wicked heads, headers and...nothing else behind them Goodluck

I actually have a 40 series flowmaster welded in place of my catlytic converter and it dumps right there onto the ground with a turndown. It sounds GREAT for stock 305. Maybe get rid of all that 3" tubing and try what I did.

I will attest to the fact that AutoRoc's Iroc is THE BADDEST sounding Iroc I have ever heard! I wanted to friggin rip my whole new exhaust off right then and there when we were crusing side by side on Woodward that one night. No contest, Denny's car sounds awesome.

IIRC, the mustangs are a 180 degree motor which is why they sound different. Same as the IRL cars are now (originally they were not). Personally, I really like the way a modded stang sounds.

You need more motor, plain and simple

all of what the other guys say is true, but you need a good motor if you want your exhaust to sound good.

I find it funny that no one has mentioned putting headers on your RS. Your friend's stang, while it may be stock, has factory headers/tubular exhuast manifolds... call them what you like. His stang has smaller valves, but has a cam with more duration and slightly higher compression. Try a set of headers, I'm sure it will get louder.

When my car had the TPI 305 in it and the PaceSetter 3" Catback, it sounded very good.

i have heard that clip before, and i always thought it sounded kinda familiar, now i know why, cuz mine has the pacesetter, or at least had it till i blew a hole in the muffler (got me a flowtech afterburner now , had to shut'er down at full throttle, cuz it stuck cuased a really big bang and back on the topic, headers will make a huge difference in sound quality and tone
