Question Why is my car ideling hot?

Yeah, my car runs really cool but when it idles for a little while after I have been driving it for about 5 min, it starts getting really hot. Should I replace the thermastat? Also, what temp should my fans kick on, I took it up to 230 and the fans never came on so i shut them down, but I do have an SLP fanswitch that Im about to connect if that will help, unless someone knows the problem.

Thumbs up

Sounds like a fan switch to me....Check your fan relays and the fusible links. Also, turn on A/C and one of your fans should come on. If nothing solves your problem...then do what I did and hook up a Manual switch to your fan (I just got one hooked up 60 amp load kept blowing inline fuse).

There is also a plastic part that pushes air up into the radiator and keep the hot air from the engine from getting into the radiator. If you are missing that it will cause the engine to run hot.

Most likely a fan problem. My stock fans(both, yes both) are wired to a switch in the car. Entirely using the stock fan relays too! Don't ask me how but a friend of mine did the work. It'll idle at 160 all day in 100 degree traffic. 180 thermostat too!

I had a similar problem. It turned out to be the coolent temp sensor which is just under the maf on my 85. It is hard to see and get at. Jump the fan and if it works the CTS might be the problem. This is not the temp indicator sensor which is on the head. This sensor gives info to the computer which controls the fan.

Thank you all, I put all of that together and fixed my car. When I bought the car, the battery cable would barely reach the battery, I had to stretch it, well, while in the process of stretching it, my fans became disconnected, so I found that, also, I checked my thermostat, turns out it wasnt turning over, it was stuck, so that was another prob. Now it runs good. Thanx guys. I put a 195 thermo on there, is that ok?

Yes, that's ok. That's factory spec. These engines are supposed to run at this temp for best efficiency and for pollution reasons. I have a 195 t-stat and my 305 stays about 210° and never gets outside its acceptable range. If you do switch to a lower temp t-stat, go to 180°. Any lower and the engine wasts gas and can have more wear. Many people think 180° is a good compromise. Also, You may have to change the turn-on temp for the fans to keep the engine at a lower temp.

Not sure about that but I have absolutely no difference between a 160 and 180 stat. In the summer (95 deg day) , with the AC on in traffic, the car gets to around 180 - 220 anyway. In any case, the engine goes into closed loop around 125 so it would manage that AFAIK.
