cracked dashboard

sorry, I dont have pics, but since I live here in houston, its hot, and its humid. so; things crack and such.

I have a crash all across my dashboard, the very top peice, from the windsheild all the way up to the steering wheel, and is there some kind of glue I could use to seal this, or would that just get really messy..

I talked to someone about it, and they said ~$2000 to get it fixed, thats sounds outrageous, and way too much, but, I dont know.

has anyone ever had this problem, or know how much it would be to get it fixed, or how I could get one off a car at a junkyard?

Re: cracked dashboard

$2000? I guess he was going to line it with gold? What a joke.. I'm assuming you're talking about THIS plastic piece between the windshield and the dash itself? There's no way to fix it and have it come out decent looking... Better off just buying one.

Re: cracked dashboard

Pretty simple... You have to remove the pillars on each side of the windshield.. If you have t-tops you need to remove the t-top and there's a couple of screws you take out and the trim pops off by pulling it... Without t-tops I believe it just pops off by pulling on it... The dash pad is held into place with 6 round velcro type fasteners... 5 at the rear of the pad and one right at the point in the front near the defrost vent... You basically pull the pad off the velcro fasteners and finagle it out of the car... Just be careful putting the new one in so you don't crack that one... They're big, thin, and awkward.

Re: cracked dashboard

well alright, that doesnt seem to complicated..

are you going to have to apply alot of force to get it back in place, or will it snap in and slide on pretty easily?

the only thing im worried about is this little red light thingy in my defroster vent..

it blinks when my car is off, I'm not sure if its an alarm.. or something with the system the previous owner had installed.. it doesnt come out.

Re: cracked dashboard

I replaced mine and I had to get it in just the right position for it to slide into place... Once it's in you can just press down slightly in the areas where the fasteners are... There's grooves on either side of the dash pad that the a-pillars slide into which hold the pad down also.

I'm sure the alarm light will slide out once you have the old pad off.. You'll have to snip the wires to it then you should be able to push it from the back and it will slide out.

Re: cracked dashboard

Oh you have a 97+ car or a Firebird.. Might want to add the year, make, model of your car in a sig so we know what car you have... The setup with the velcro fasteners and locations were for a 93-96 Camaro... So they may not be in the same location on yours... The pad might be held in a totally different way also.. I'm not sure... Maybe someone with the same type can shed some light on that.
