Question Leaking T-Tops

For all the time I have had my 1979 Z28, my t-tops have always leaked. It destroyed the interior with stains and I am now going to replace it. Before I start my project, I want to know how to fix the t-tops and prevent them from leaking. Do I replace the rubber seals or is it a lot more complicated process than that? Thanks!

I would think it would be the rubber seals.. Do the seals look dry and stuff? One of the places that they leak from the most is where the window glass meets the T Tops..

The rubber seals do look very dry and worn out. They are original. The leaks come from where the window meets the t-top and where the t-top meets the roof of the car. So I got both sides causing me trouble. Hopefully it is just the rubber seals and nothing more.

again, its probably the seals or something.. a guy i met is a mechanic at a chevy dealer, adn he was telling me not to go into high pressure car washes, and to use some.. sumtin like grease, but the name escapes me.. to keep the seals in good shape. He was sayin that all T-Tops will eventually leak, its just a matter of when. Thats the downside to having them.

I got T-Tops on mine, and they leak a little but it aint worth it to fix yet. I'll be driving in the rain to work, which is like a half hour, and I may get 5 drops in my car. My seals are startin to get dry too... Maybe someone else knows the name of that stuff to put on.

any thing like Vasoline works on the T-tops to keep them from drying out.

richiez28,
I would replace your seals then keep up with vasoline like once amonth during the hot summer months.
Then every couple of months during the dry winter months.

Cant you play with the shimms on the brackets the the lock on the t-tops slide into and see if it helps. If you drive with the tops out a lot they will deteriorate the seals if you dont keep them greased up, but if you were to adjust the shimms on the t-top brakets in the pillars to give the tops a tighter seal that should stop them from leaking would't it.. I did a t-top conversion on mine a few months back and they leaked a little after the first rain the I took one of the thin shimms out on each side and they havent leaked since and the alignment is fine.

I spray mine with silocone.
Never had a leak.
Although I can't remember the last time I've driven in the rain.
The only water my T-Tops see is when it is standing still - and I'm washing it.....

I used silcone spray on mine, so far so good. Leaks stoped, knock on wood. I also have noticed that the t-top shades have worn out my headliner. Time for a new one.

Where are you gonna get your headliner? I'm looking for one as well. Mine has more than a few rips and tears but it is beyond my expertise to try and fix it. If you can find a quality headliner for a good price, let me know!

Your weather stripping is likely starting to suffer from dry rot.
