See?

When you're feeling blue for the 'ol General, just look over at VW with a $28K econo car and a $90K VW Phaeton(with the BIG VW right on the grill!) and things don't look so bad after all.

It's always comforting to know you're not the worst.

Look at Mitsubishi when you need some cheering up too(not at the EVO, but at the company's financial situation and the rest of their lineup)

Despite love and affection from the media, Ford and Chrysler aren't in that great of shape either.

Mopar's car lineup is mostly old and forgettable, save one model. Minivans are falling behind the Japanese. Ram sales are starting to drop off. Dakota/Durango are too new to know their fortunes. The good thing about Chrysler is that they're small enough that one successful model can literally turn the company around (unlike GM).

Now Ford. Their new cars are all selling below expectations, save one model (see a pattern here?). Freestar is a disaster. Ranger is fast becoming irrelevant with no successor in sight. F-150 is doing well, but it's not really gaining that much on the competition, even with GM's trucks being 6 years old. All of Fords SUVs are also-rans.

As has been noted, GM/Ford/Chrysler each seem to take their turn in the barrel. Most times the crisis will breed something new and innovative to bring them out of their funk and put them on top again. I'm not sure that GM has such an ace in the hole this time.

A VE is available with less content (no dual climate zones, no rain sensing wiper, no self dimming mirror, cloth instead of leatherette, 15" wheels with hubcaps and a single disc instead of a 6 disc radio, no power adjustments on the seats) all this stuff is standard on the next level for $22000 + 16" wheels. BTW on a $26000 Jetta you get more equipment than on some cars that cost $40000 and they are built like tanks.
