STORYLINE:
After a heated year of sharp words and forked tongues, DCM's Schroer was asked by Ford's Colletti to "Bring it on". He did, and lost!
It all began back in April of 2002. At a press meeting at the Detroit Athletic Club, DCM's Jim Schroer announced that the new SRT-10 was going to "dust the F-150 Lightning". Not one to be outdone, Ford's John Colletti replied,"While you're trying to dethrone the Lightning, our GT40 will reduce your Viper to a status somewhere between earthworm and garter snake." GM's Bob Lutz got in on the conversation, quoted as saying,"Americans were 'deprived of their V8s' when car downsizing, along with the first U.S. emissions controls, strangled the muscle-car era." Lutz then went on to confirm his intent to import the Monaro as a GTO for GM's participation in the return to musclecar days.
Big words from big men.
Ah yes, the boyish hot-rodder attitude comes through... but the individuals who are demonstrating this attitude ALSO are the people holding the checkbook that can finance such wild creations. In Ford's case, the new CEO is happy with Colletti's style and historical performance as the leader of their SVT group, so the requests for funding of high-performance projects are getting approved at an unprecedented pace. Can Chrysler keep up... time will tell.
Move forward to Jan 03... The SRT-10 makes the scene and comes out swinging. It manages to better the times of the Lightning by only mere tenths in the quarter mile due to it's weight, but never the less is king. HOWEVER, at the NAIAS show, Colletti unveils his supertuned version of the Lightning, good for an advertised 500hp! Given a 400-pound weight advantage, better Cg, better polar inertia factor, and about $30K less money, the Lightning appears to be on it's way back to the top. Look out SRT-10 owners!
The Viper still has yet to see it's new competitior - the GT (GT-40 for those who are historically challenged) on the street, but it is on it's way. The first 3 units - symbolic of the 1-2-3 Sweep at Le Mans in 1966 that the cars became known for - are due to be ready at Ford's 100th birthday celebration this summer. Expect 1000+ units/year after the celebratory introduction.
Jumping to May of '03, Colletti is presented with an unforeseen opportunity to sucker-punch the whole musclecar market... in an unexpected move he goes straight after the Z06, Viper, and supercar class and debuts the new concept '05 Mustang Cobra - powered by an incredible new V-10! The '05 Cobra, comes equipped with the V-10, M6, and GT-based suspension components. The engine is the same developed and first seen in the Ford 427 concept car. The 427 engine produces a tremendous 590 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 509 foot-pounds of torque at 5500 rpm. Remarkably, the engine is almost 70 pounds lighter than the 5.4-liter 32-valve Cobra R engine from the Ford Mustang, offering improved Cg for the front-engined Cobra. The 427 achieves this astonishing power-to-weight ratio through the following attributes:
• Siamese bore aluminum V-10 engine block based on Ford's modular V-8 DOHC engines
• Ford-pioneered metal spray process to maximize the bore at 95mm
• Newly designed lightweight forged aluminum pistons with a very short compression height
• Aluminum cylinder head derived from the SVT Cobra R Mustang
• New billet H-beam connecting rods and billet steel common pin crankshaft for increased strength without the need for a balance shaft
• Lightweight hollow stem valves
So ladies and gentlemen, it appears as if Mr. Colletti has indeed made good on his word, as promised to Mr. Schroer - the lightning is back on top again, the vintage-styled GT-40 is out with a vengeance, and putting the icing on the cake is the all-new high-tech V-10 Cobra. All we can do now is wait for Paxton or Vortech to offer a 6-9 psi system to bolt onto this N/A V-10!
Until next month, from PPPublishing,

The creative juices are flowing this morning... what can I say.
Seriously, I am trying to put together some interesting issues about the Mustang's future right now.
Z284ever - you are on the ball! You are the first I've heard say anything about the 427 in a Mustang outside of the MCA or SVT group - nice work! All I've heard is rumors, if I get anything SOLID about the 427 or the 5.0-3V, I'll post it. Lots of talking going on right now, and most of it seems geared towards the '05 Cobra or a similar "niche" offering (a.k.a. Shelby). A bizarre twist is the concurrent development of a different 5.0-HO engine in Oz simultaneously. I'm loving all the high-output work going on, but too many cooks in the kitchen can spoil the meal, if you catch my drift.

590hp v10 in a mustang.
Why do i not see this happening?
Here's my thinking...2005 or 2006 Cobra R!!!!. The last R model would have been 2000. There was a 5 year period in between the 95 R and the 00 R. They've also had an R model with every type body since the late Foxbods of the early 90's and a this new body will soon get an R version as well. If not the 1st year, the 2nd year i thing. Waddaya guys think? Possible R model or not? I think it's a good possibility.
Why don't they put this engine into the GT40? I'm sure it's over 100+ lbs lighter then a blown 5.4L as well as being a good bit more powerful. That and the fact that it's a 427 just like the original.

I think it would. Here you have the GT40 as the Ford halo car with it's V8 for 100K+ and then you have this Mustang with a V10? It reduces the percieved value of the GT40 because it's engine is now "inferior" to the Mustang. I will still say that it is an exercise, not reality. Manufacturers do this crap all the time.

Let's put it this way. Soon(once the new stang comes out 05) you will be able to say.
New.
Shelby.
Mustang.
v10.
