Then the '05 Mustang comes along and BAM!, moves almost 200,000 units and sells out before the model year ends. Even the pencil neck bureaucrats took notice. The same dimwitted bureaucrats who were awakened out of their comatose stupor by the sold out 300 the year before.

If you are truly a Chevy enthusiast...send Ford a thank you card for the Mustang and Chrysler for the 300.....these cars created more focus at Chevy than all the years of letters, emails and phone calls that people like us could have ever made.
Competition always brings the best cars to the table. Unfortunatley, up until 2 years ago, the competition was views as the japanese. So we made our best Japanese style cars. Was not good enough. With that changing the US companies are getting focused. I hope it stays that way. There are more cars that have my attention this year then from the last 20 years combined.

As long as it looks killer...WTF cares if it's a little too retro or not?

But point is, NO-ONE here knows what it looks like.

There was a post, from someone very famous here that said that the car won't be retro, personally I don't care if its retro or not.. as long that we can recognize a Camaro and not a rebadge..I have very high hopes for this NAIAS

Man, I am starting to think about getting plane tickets to go if this continues to look good!!!

No one ever answered my question....maybe they didn't on purpose? I'm just curious on what the holdup is with the new Camaro taking possibly another 3 years? I know the political answer that they pulled all engineers to work on the GMT900's. But this thread was from almost a year ago now.....

They are essentially starting over....and I believe we'll get a much better car because of it.

I'm feeling the same way, Doug. Whatever it is, it better look killer. It needs to be the right size, with the right proportions and the right stance.

I was just thinking that myself............................................ ............

Look.......no matter what the car is styled after....1st, 2nd 3rd, or 4th gen, 50% are going to be ecstatic, and 50% are gonna be upset....and I'd also bet that 80% of the 50 % that are upset will be fine 6 to 12 months later....that's just the nature of this business....and it's 'magnified' when it involves a car that invokes as much passion as our beloved Camaro does.

Once again:

>Has to have muscular V8 engine.with class leading performance....(accent the 'class leading)
>Has to stick to the road like velcro. (I still love the fact that a 4th gen SS will whip a Viper on a road course --stock to stock)
>Has to LOOK like a Camaro....and be recognizable from a 1/4 mile
>Has to do this at a Chevrolet price.

Look.......do you REALLY think GM is being 'quiet' about a next gen RWD coupe because they just want to upset you? Do you REALLY think that? There have been so many hints over the past two years that I kinda want to write all those hints on a ball bat and whack a few people over the head with it because they just don't get it.

Guys...I don't mean to be unpleasant......but really.....there are a couple of people on this board that you REALLY need to start listening to......and there are a few that you should pretty much discount.

(sorry, it's been a long day)

On another note......most of you have read AutoExtremist and his take on what was recently shown at GM Design. I was there. There are very few cars out there today that are genuinely handsome or beautiful......I had a really big grin on my face when I left.

Re: Autoextremist: "Don't be surprised to see a Camaro concept this January".

Great News Scott!

Although new to the boards, like many here I e-mailed Chevrolet back in 2000-2001 when the news of the Camaro's demise was made official. It has been a long 3 years with no Camaro to oogle ( I personally loved the 00-02 SS) and the idea that we MAY see one (since it not official yet, I don't want anyone to construe a possible response as you overstepping your NDA) in January has gotten me very excited.

If this hypothetical "RWD V-8 Coupe" WERE to be built around 2007-2008, would GM consider having dealer or factory installed performance mods? ie Headers, CAI, Cat Back's etc.? This to me would seem a logical way for GM to make even more profit on the car, both in terms of a higher ticket, as well as having the extra finance charges on the initial purchase price of the components.

Lastly, I will volunteer to take one for the team and be hit with this bat, as long as I get to walk around afterwards being "in the know"

James

PS-Count me in for a 08 SS!

Re: Autoextremist: "Don't be surprised to see a Camaro concept this January".

As a die-hard Camaro enthusiast (mostly of the 4th gen; hey, I've already had four of them in five years!), I have decided I will simply wait to see what it looks like before I decide if it's for me or not. Period.

With that said, I'd STRONGLY prefer this new generation Camaro be an evolutionary design with some cues from its heritage as another guy alreadly pointed out. But if this is a complete retro-design of a 1st gen, I'll probably be looking to buy the original thing instead.

Lastly, I REALLY hope we'll be able to start purchasing the production model at some point in 2007. I can definitely get myself excited knowing I'll have this historical icon (my true passion in life) to buy within the next two years. However, if this is going to be a three or more year wait...

All in all though, the positive news of this next generation Camaro can't help but bring a to my face right now,

Mike

Re: Autoextremist: "Don't be surprised to see a Camaro concept this January".

The whole issue about the retro thing is that people don't want to deal with a Mustang copy stigma. Honestly any if the car has 1st gen "heritage" cues it will still be seen as retro by many, just like the Mustang now.

I really think in the end it's not going to be a big issue for the real fans, but the media will/would use a retroish theme to tear the car apart.

I think all the crying is more about the thought of having to deal with everyone else beating on the car, not the car itself. Camaro people are just tired of defending and selling the idea of their car being something good to people they know.

Re: Autoextremist: "Don't be surprised to see a Camaro concept this January".

My .02 the term "retro" means nothing. I think that if it looks like a camaro and there are hints of the past generations then it's retro. I think if the stilling is a strong and sexy it will sell. I love all generations of camaro and if they use cues of them then they can't go wrong in the right price point. On a side note GM if you are listening you NEED to start leaking information NOW. The time to start cutting into mustang sales is now and the way to do that is to give enthusiast a taste of what is coming, word of mouth will carry the buzz.

Riiiight... And then you woke up.

No. I think they're being quiet because they don't have jack squat in the pipeline. That would be the MOST LIKELY reason. And even if the '05 Mustang has finally pounded some sense back into their heads, judging from the execution on the Solstice(that was an accelerated program, wasn't it?), we don't have squat to get excited about for at least 5 years.

Maybe you can tell us if the existing GM RWD coupe known as GTO gets the big axe next year.
