Bob Lutz Interview in Motion (GM's Canadian magazine)
In the fall/winter edition of Motion (GM Canada's magazine), there was an interview with Bob Lutz. Here is a small excerpt:
<Motion> The Pontiac Solstice went from sketch to functioning car in five months. The story is already a legend in the industry. Any more surprises like that in store this year?
<Bob> Theres going to be an unbelievably exciting array of concept cars at the 2003 Detroit Auto Show. I think it's going to be our finest crop ever. I don't want to give anything away, but there's going to be at least one huge surprise, which, alone, will make it worth going to that show.
I was sitting there pondering what this meant. And I have come to the conclusion, that it could mean a couple of things.
1. New Camaro concept.
2. Production Cadillac Cien announcement?
3. C6 Vette is released as final production version?
4. GM Announces production of Solstice?
What do you guys think? I don't post here very often, but I am a lurker, and visit the site on almost a daily basis. I was going to be able to afford a Z/28 next year, but GM squashed my hopes of that by cancelling production. If GM can announce a new Z/28 for production, I will be one of the first in line to get one.
Is it possible that a new Camaro has been stealing development funds from the C6, and is sharing a lot of common parts with the C6 or other GM vehicles, so that they can hide it?
Just a thought...

Wow. Thanks for the info.
I honestly think there is a legit chance that this could be a Camaro concept... I really do.
The others you listed (Cien, C6, and Solstice) are also legit possibilities.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for a Camaro Concept!

I dont think its the C6 because thats not exactly a huge surprise. Everyone knows its coming. Unless its something really big and revolutionary. I doubt its the camaro. I think there's a better chance of the Cien or a production Solstice.

But would a production Solstice really be a huge surprise? We're all expecting GM to produce it eventually. When they announce it, it won't be much of a surprise. Certainly not a HUGE one.
As for the C6, I've not seen one picture of it, or really been given a hint as to it's appearance (other than speculation, and perhaps the lack of hidden headlights). It would be a huge suprise to see a completely redisigned 'vette.
My money goes on Camaro or Cien. I'm hoping it's Camaro, as I don't think that Cien will ever be made. It's not the type of car GM is into making. They've always gone for bulk sales, not a car that they're only going to sell maybe 50 of a year.
Go CAMARO!!!

I’ve got my fingers crossed once again for a Camaro. Yet I'm betting on the C6 for this one. It makes sense timing wise, doesn’t it? The C6 is suppose to debut soon anyway right? Its not a huge surprise to us because we know its coming, but I think we may be cutting this quote apart too much. I doubt its the Cien, wasn’t that pretty much shelved?
This quote alone gives me more hope though. I really like what this guy has to say. Guess We'll just have to wait and see though.

I don't think it will be a Camaro for my money, I would have to go with a newer concept that is not spoken about too much (element of surprise) so when i think about it, what has been given least confirmation from GM other than sources that we have? 2 possibilities V8 Monte Carlo with impressive specs in a revised sheet metal that will add a good amount of european feel for the chevy coupe line(since camaro is no longer there) also it might be an Impala SS based on the Monaro or something to that effect (Commodore VY, as that was the original plan) or better yet it may be the SS Concept model but in a productionr ready form, BUT for all we know it may not even deal with cars, it could be the Reg. Cab Silverado SS with a Big Block, the possibilities are endless for our speculation, but i wouldn't keep hopes on it being a Camaro any time soon, maybe once the C6 is developed there is a chance we will see something but not till then (THOUGH I HOPE I AM WRONG)

Honestly, I think a Camaro concept this soon would be the biggest surprise GM could possibly come up with. That's why I'm not holding my breath. I think the "huge surprise" Lutz speaks of will be a surprise to the general public but maybe not so surprising or even exciting to us.

As mentioned, this may not be a HUGE surprise for those of us who seem analyze this everyday. Maybe something more surprising for the general public. I do think a production C6 would qualify as huge.
Other possibilities...
Production Saturn Sky
Production version or new Bel Air concept (hardtop?)
Higher spec/special edition GTO
Holden-based El Camino concept/announcement
Revised Solstice to midengine as Fiero concept! (well, doesn't hurt to dream a little here...)
Going to be an awesome NAIAS!
