I find this somewhat interesting/surprising, bein gthat Bonneville is generally accepted to be a lame-duck platform right now...
Nonetheless... it's nice to hear.

BTW...trans problem for Grand Prix still exists. The larger Bonneville can accept the larger 4T-80 transaxle.

Not so quick.....
The Bonneville shares platforms with the Aurora , Le Sabre (I think) and Deville...IT IS NOT based off the w-body (Grand Prix, Intrigue, Impala, Monte Carlo, Regal, Century).
The Bonneville because it is based off the same platform as the Aurora can readily accept the much larger and expensive 4T80 transaxle used with the Northstar family of V8's
The W-body on the other hand I have heard would require "extensive chassis modification" to accept the 4T80

There is no reason, that I know of, why the Aurora's 4.0 liter L47 V8 needs to be mated to the 4T80E - it only has 260lb/ft of torque. If anyone has noticed, the 4T65E has a maximum rating of 280lb/ft.http://www.gm.com/automotive/gmpower.../apps/4t65.htm
Even the current 3.8 S/C in the Grand Prix has 280lb/ft of torque.
I think the issue in past has been engine/transmission commonality with the higher production Cadillac derivatives. However, there may be additional refinement issues - the 4T65E is fairly refined with a low torque peak pushrod V6, but had LOUSY shift quality with the higher revving 3.5 V6 in the Intrigue.
The new V8 Bonneville GTX is good news in principal, but considering that this car will be above the current V6 SSEi ($35k+), I don't see a really big market. It's too bad this effort is being wasted on a "lame duck" when the Chevrolet division really needs an image booster for its dreary sedan range.
I think that an V8 engined Impala, even with the current luke-warm Aurora tuning, would be a hot ticket. I know a supercharged SS is on the way, but how is that better than a GTP?

Incidentally, Pontiac will have five "GXP" concept cars at SEMA.
1. Vibe GXP
2.Grand Am GXP
3. Sunfire GXP
4.Grand Prix GXP
5. Bonneville GXP
GXP will mark GM Performance Division's cars for Pontiac.
