Cadillac to Launch Compact Luxury Sedan in 2012
by Cadillac on Thursday, August 4, 2011 at 8:33am
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – Cadillac will expand its model lineup in 2012 with a new entry in the compact luxury segment codenamed ATS. General Motors North America President Mark Reuss released this sketch of the model today at the Center for Automotive Research’s Management Briefing Seminars.
The small Cadillac will begin production next summer at Lansing Grand River, the same Michigan assembly plant that builds the award-winning midsize Cadillac CTS sedan, coupe and wagon. The plant received a $190 million investment and 600 jobs for the new model.
“The car we codenamed ATS is being developed to be a driver's car on an all-new Cadillac-specific RWD-AWD architecture,” Reuss said. “We have extensively and exhaustively studied the competitive segment, and we have benchmarked the best. And when this car comes out, that will be readily apparent.”

The car has a good looking profile and proportions, although it doesn't look to be breaking any new ground style-wise - it doesn't seem like much of a break from current CTS styling - excepting the Converj-like headlamp and the lack of fender vents, that is. It's still attractive though in that Art & Science way.
It will be curious to see how it turns out - hopefully not so weighty as some recent reports suggest. Guess we'll see. For the moment, I'd say good job GM!

I think it appears a little odd from this angle because the belt-line slopes up to give the car fake-rake (as is the style these days) and since the rear is taller from bottom to top than the nose it appears as if the wheel is undersized.

Looks a lot like the 1st Gen CTS. And it does seem very tall in the back over the wheel wells.
The key will be how much smaller it is than the CTS so that while it looks like a CTS it's proportions will look better in person.

I think the pic looks weird because of the stylized photo.
The artificial/unnatural lighting of this computer altered rendering highlights the car in a way that can never happen in real life.
You're looking at the car in a way that you'll never be able to in real life.
I bet any car would look strange if you altered the photo in the way this one is.
