Cadillac gets 300 horsepower next year......from a V6!
The most powerful regular production V6 engine ever made by General Motors (yep, more than the Grand National..... sorry, the GNX engine was tweaked outside of GM).
302 horsepower, 272 ft/lbs of torque.
This engine will be sweet in the CTS....... as well as a certain future coupe.
302 horsepower, 272 ft/lbs of torque.

2008 STS V6 engine delivers 302 hp

The most powerful six-cylinder production engine ever built by General Motors arrives in July in the 2008 Cadillac STS. The aluminum 3.6-liter V6 gets direct fuel injection, which yields 302 hp, 272 lb-ft of torque, a 47-hp and 20-lb-ft increase from the 2007 3.6-liter V6. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard as well, up one gear from the previous model.
The STS, launched in 2004 as an ’05 model, is offered in both V6 and V8 models, with 80 percent of the buyers choosing the six. Output for the 4.6-liter V8 remains the same at 320 hp and 315 lb-ft of torque.
The direct-injection V6 will also power the next-generation Cadillac CTS, with a slight difference in horsepower as a result of changes in engine air intake and exhaust configurations.
Also included in the STS mid-cycle update are electronic add-ons such as lane departure warning, side blind-zone alert and active steering with enhanced StabiliTrak. The active steering is available only on all-wheel-drive, V8-powered models.
The interior and exterior design changes, with a new grille—similar to one first seen on the Cadillac Sixteen concept car—and new front fascia and lower intake. The car now has chrome door handles, new rocker moldings and side vent “fender air extractors.” Inside the car, the center stack has a touch more chrome, taken from the Cadillac V series. New 18-inch wheels are also part of the package.
Look for the base car to start at a price similar to the ’07 model, in the low $40,000 range.

This would make a sweet base engine for the 2009 Camaro

I doubt if anybody could by seat of their pants.
Please tell me you are not joining the "I'm all about the stats" crowd?!?!
PLEASE don't go to the Dark Side, Luke!
Feel the force (302hp of it)... it is strong!
Seriously, I;m with you on the MPG thing. I think they all should be getting more aggressive about mpg before Obama gets in office and mandates it.

While it is great to hear they are bumping up the performance of the V6 engine, and it was well documented that the vast majority of people opt. for the V6 version, why would anyone chose the V8 version in 2008 when you only get 18hp and 43 ft-lbs more? and how much more will I have to pay for the V8 when I can get a nice performer in the V6, and ultimately get better gas milage too.

Can you tell the difference between a 302 hp V6 and a 320hp V6 anywhere but a dyno?

Will the V8 make the V6 feel slow? Probably not. But there's still a difference.
Is that difference enough to pay extra for the V8? Possibly not, for me, in that type of car. Of course, the V6 will never sound as good as the Northstar...
EDIT: DOH! I just reread your post (much later this evening), and I see now that you were talking about a competitor's 320 hp V6 vs 302 hp in the STS. I saw the 320 hp number and my mind automatically jumped to the Northstar (since that is its rated output in the STS); I thought you were saying that it would be silly to get the V8 now when it only has 320 hp...
Perhaps I should have read the post to which you were responding, along with reading yours a little more carefully...
