GM's high-feature 3.6-liter V6

I know this engine is going in the 2004 CTS and next gen Grand Am and is going to be 250-260HP but question is - is this engine going to be DOHC or OHV and is it new from the ground up?

High feature = OHC
High value = OHV

Both are clean-sheet designs.

I'm willing to bet itll be a OHC design. It would make sense for the engineers to design it that way to be competitive with the import competition. The power delivery would also theoretically be smoother.

I was under the impression that it would be DOHC, but I could be wrong.....

As for power, look for 270 in the CTS, and 250 in the Grand Am.

260hp Grand Ams? Suddenly my 285hp Z28 doesn't seem all that special.

New from the ground up and coming in a variety of sizes: 2.8 litre, 3.2 litre, 3.6 litre and 3.8 litre. It'll be built at two plants, one in Australia and the other in Canada. The Canadian plant will handle supply for North America, while the one in Australia supplies GMs European brands (Alfa Romeo, Opel, Fiat, Saab).

The 3.6 litre is, according to an Aussie magazine, good for 189kW or about 253hp. Holden will use the 3.8 litre version, which is actually slightly less powerful (about 2hp), but has more torque.

The HFV6 has an aluminium block and heads and double overhead camshafts actuating 4 valves per cylinder. The vee angle is 60 degrees. Apparently there's lots of high-tech stuff that can be included or excluded in the engine depending on cost. Things like under-piston oil jets and variable valve lift.

It is also know that the HFV6 will come with a turbo with some engines (saab etc). And i just read an interesting bit of news from a 'reliable' source, that the 4L Inline6 turbo that Ford has introduced has stung Holden into action, as they contacted Turbo manufacturer Garrett in the last two weeks regarding a twin turbo arrangement for the upcoming HFV6.

Looks like someone is going to play catch up, and if this is the case, Holden had better increase the power on the LS1 or a TTV6 will be the top of Holden's performance line.

So, the high value V6's won't be an evolution of the current 60* V6 family?

Where does this leave the current 3800 Series II? Last I heard is that GM was going to continue to build it. I wonder if the replacement for the J-body would get the 2.8L or 3.2L version of the HFV6 as well?

The high-feature V6 will be in the Grand Prix, not the Grand Am (that's getting the high-value V6).

The general range for the high-feature V6 is in the 250-260-hp range, depending on how it's configured. I find it laughable that they can't even get it in the same ballpark with the Nissan 3.5L V6 (G35, 350Z, Maxima, Altima). And GM is going to be at least 3 years late to the party on top of that.

Those who follow will never lead. Still looking for a heartbeat...

Unhappy I know what you mean....

Just take the XV8 for example....

It's a revolutionary powerplant, that GM wont let see the light of day..... errr... that is, until 4 other companies produce it before them.

On the plus side 3800 Series III horsepower is now supposedly at 255.

The L67 will make 250 hp, not 255 hp. Nissan is making over 280 hp with 3.5 liters and no blower. BMW is making almost Z06 power out of 4.4 liters. Yeah, GM's on the cutting edge alright...

the BMW engine has 3 more cams and twice the valves which add A LOT of $$$$$ to the cost of the engine, and it gets worse gas mileage.

so lest see, the GM engine
- cost about half as much to build (does anyone have the exact #'s?)
- puts out more HP
- Gets better gas mileage

so how is it not cutting edge????
