Grand Am drop top/ Malibu Classic/ Orion & Lansing plant news

Grand Am will be moved to the Buick/Pontiac/Oldsmobile large car plant in Orion Michigan. According to Automotive News, the plant will also make a drop top version of Grand Am, as well as a possible convertible hardtop model.

Also in the same article, it mentions that Chevrolet is considering continuing making the current Malibu (called. believe it or not, Malibu Classic) once the new one comes out as a fleet sales vehicle.

The SSR is being made at Lansing's craft center, & Cadillac has a new plant there. Anyone have any idea what's going to be made at the new large Delta township plant?

Seems everything being made in that area is rear drive.

Automotive News Article:
" Reuters / October 02, 2002

DETROIT -- General Motors on Wednesday said it will invest about $300 million in its Orion, Mich., assembly plant about 25 miles outside Detroit, where it will make the next-generation Pontiac Grand Am.

The investment is part of a wider shift in production plans in preparation for GM's new range of mid-size cars to be built using common group parts that the automaker calls its Epsilon architecture.

GM said it will move the Grand Am and the Chevrolet Malibu out of the Lansing, Mich., assembly plant where they are currently made.

The Orion assembly plant currently makes the Buick Park Avenue, the Buick LeSabre, the Pontiac Bonneville and the Oldsmobile Aurora large cars. But sales of those vehicles have slowed, and earlier this year, GM laid off about 1,750 workers at the plant as it trimmed production to one shift from two.

With the Grand Am, Orion will again go to two shifts, or about 2,500 workers, but that's down significantly from the more than 4,000 workers on two shifts earlier this year due to leaner production techniques, sources said.

GM said earlier this year that it was prepared to invest $325 million at the plant, pending negotiations with union and government officials.

"The insertion of Grand Am allows Orion to have a more stable future. The breadth of the product is going to expand with an open-air (convertible) version," said Michael Robinet, vice president of global forecast services of CSM Worldwide.

The new Grand Am, one of GM's top-selling cars, is expected to go on sale in 2004. GM has said that it is considering building a hardtop convertible version of the Grand Am.

Lansing's loss of the new versions of the Malibu and the Grand Am, and the elimination of the Oldsmobile Alero, will result in that plant cutting back to a single shift of workers building a single vehicle in 2004, sources told Reuters.

GM is considering building the current version Malibu, which will be dubbed the Malibu "classic", to be sold to some fleets such as businesses and rental agencies.

The affected Lansing workers could be moved to GM's new assembly plant to be built in Lansing, the Delta Township plant."

Exclamation

Ironcally, I just came across this article regarding the Delta plant. Though "analysts" predict it will make sport utility vehicles, the plant is tentatively scheduled to open in 2006. The only thing I know of likely comming out in 2006 are cars.

Keeping fingers crossed.
