INCOMING!.......Japanese pony car!
Word is, that Toyotas 2+2 "ponycar", the Supra will return for 2004.
It will be smaller, lighter and be more driver oriented than the previous model, (if that is possible).
Oh....and it will have a 350 hp V6.

I heard about that in Austraila (alot of our imports & news on them somehow end up there before here). It seems that it too will end up around the $30K mark along with every other car stampeding to fill in Camaro's void.

I've heard very little about the return of the Supra. But all I have heard is a fact here and there on this board. Nothing specific, just "The Supra will return." Is there any hard fact to be at hand? 2004 is only 2 years away. I would think there'd be some information by now.

There are going to be a whole bunch of Japanese RWD coupes coming. Everyone already knows about the 350Z. There will also be a G35 coupe, Mazda RX8, and maybe...just maybe a new Infiniti Skyline with a 350-400hp V8 for the US market.
Throw in the Supra, DEW98 Mustang, (and maybe Cougar) and HEMI Charger....
Chevy had better be working overtime to bring us a WORLD CLASS 5th gen to compete!
NO EXCUSES!!!!!

I bet the Skyline enthusiasts are going bonkers over the V8 idea. When I think of Skyline I think of a boosted, 4wd, 6 cylinder. But I like the idea of the V8, although I am biased on V8's
But if that will come over soon, Nissan will have to pull an off the shelf V8 and the only one I can think of is the Q45 4.5L v8 that makes I think 340hp. I'm not sure about that number. So figure a tuned 4.5L in a Skyline, they'd try to produce 350-375hp out of it N/A.
Camaro is going to come back in even more turbulent waters now with the Skyline.
DEW98 Boss 302 vs. 6.2L HEMI Charger R/T vs. TT Supra vs. 4.5L Skyline V8!
Question about the future Supra, if its going to return in 2004, and we haven't seen anything so far, its my guess that the Supra will have to be based upon something already in the Toyota family. I've thought about this before and right now thinking about 2004 as a launch date, but maybe the IS300 would be the platform for the Supra. A reskinned version at a Toyota would fit. It is already based upon a very well selling vehicle, allowing a low number, high performance version to be made. It is RWD, seats 4, and contains a 3.0L I6 engine that puts out 225hp.
3.0L I6? That sounds awfully familiar... like the MKIV which had a 3.0L I6. A Turbo'ed IS300 engine could easily make 350hp and using the same engine, a N/A base model could be produced. A reskin and a turbo design could happen in a relatively very small amount of time being that much of the engineering is already done.
It would be a very small Supra, but still, with the 3.0L engine and a RWD platform, I think it would work well as an MKV

Let me tell ya, if a 5th Gen Z28 (considering its the top model) is gonna be a competitor its gonna have to be an LS6 or something with around 450HP and probably more than 5.7 Liters.

Too bad the Mazda RX-7 or Mitsubishi 3000gt doesn't make a comeback. I like those a lot more than Supras. Yet if they don't change the Supra too much, I may have to "dream" about buying one .

We have:
'95 Sebring Silver Z28
'02 Camaro SS 35th Anniversary
Wanting:
'94-'97 Quasar Blue Z28 with low miles and no ground effects, preferably dark interior

Oh yeah. But the 5th gen will require way more than power.
For the next Camaro to not be the laughing stock of the segment it will require a world class chassis (Sigma), fit and finish and quality of materials. It will also need an image.
Hopefully the Z/28 will again become the performance flag bearer for Camaro. Camaro will need such a focused image to compete.
If anyone was under the impression that competition in this segment is fierce now....just wait for circa 2007!
So pull out the stops boys...sideline any half measures or excuses that might compromise the competency of a 5th gen Camaro...and give us a car that we can be proud of!

I'm hoping the 5th gen Camaro Z28 wuold have LS6 with the power-weight ratio of Z06.. And the SS will be like a $2000 option for a stroked LS6. and a GOOD IRS like the vette's. in the $20k range. That would be a killer car all around!

As for a $20k price tag...I wouldn't hold my breathe, that should just about cover a well appointed next gen Cavalier.

On common thread among the upcomming invasion of Japaneese sports coupes other than targeting the $30 mark, is that all are getting LT1 performance or better using 6 cylinders (save maybe Skyline).
Should the next Camaro also be a lightweight 6 cylinder (OHV not OHC) if performance equals or betters the current LS1 Z28?

As the top model?
I scream an emphatic "NO!"
V8 is a must.
