In terms of looks, I like the new Mustang fastback coupe better than the GTO (conv Must, so so). If it gets the 400 HP motor, Brembos and IRS so it'll go around a track, I'm all for the Mustang. I am not clear what equip the GTO will have on it, and the show Mustang may suffer some major downgrades.

Well, I've ordered a black GTO, so I guess that says it all for me. I was at one point leaning towards a new cobra, but the high-chair feel, mile-away-3rd-gear throws, lots of suspicious break downs/blow ups, 395 HP @low 13 1/4s (seen with my own eyes on several occasions, have yet to even hear of a stock one breaking the 13's around here at ~ sealevel ) and finally the halt in production swayed me back to the general. I was actually getting real excited about a new cobra, but.........

it was dyno day down here in sydney at one of the performance shops.
Al rocked up in his mean black (heads/cam) monaro, and proceeded to spin the rollers to a tune of 468rwhp, the noise that ls1 made as it ramped up was and the graph on the dyno headed skyward, his car was lowered, but when he takes it to the track he changes the springs, which doesn't take very long at all on these things.
here is a pic of it - clickhere
Al was only passed by the "planB" ute which made close to 500 at the rear wheels - clickhere

I dont know what the production Mustang will look like, but I bet it will have totally different proportions. No 20" wheels, no extremely low ride height, no silly low roofline that no one over 5'5" would fit in comfortably, and I wonder if there will have to be quarter windows for visibility issues? Things like this will alter the appearance drastically.
Whatever Ford does to the final version, It'll still be nice.
I Vote for GTO, the car looks awesome.

Now, do understand that I see nothing wrong with you putting an order in for a GTO, as it is your choice. However, it would look like you really worked hard at convincing yourself that the Cobra is a terrible car.
No I do not own a Cobra. As a matter of fact, I do not own a Mustang of any kind currently (I do, however, have a '68 Camaro SS 396/375 car that we are restoring). However, I would love to have an '03 Vert............ so, I spend time on the various forums learning about them (you know......... in case I win the lottery ) This is the only reason I am questioning your post.

when they were first starting to hit the tracks a few around here suffered a quick and abrupt end of life, then there were questions surrounding some really bad 1/4 times vs HP. The cars here were seemingly driven fine, they just couldnt go as predicted, and I think low 13s are pretty common everywhere, with high 12s as well. Never said none were capable of it. Please re-read my post.
As far as the shut down of production issue, I dont own a blazer either. Not sure I'd feel comfortable with a TB for a while either, but an SC'd motor trying to deliver its max potential has a lot less room for error. Not saying its a horrible motor, I just personally have no faith in it at this point. As far as bulletproof.... I would never call any 4.6 bullet proof. I'd say the LT motors are WAY more bullet proof than a 4.6. JMO, of course.
However, had the cobra gotten the lightening set up (as it should have, IMO ), it would probably already be a done deal for me I would have to adjust to the cockpit configuration for that one.

GTO all the way. I like the American-BMW direction Pontiac is headed; the pricing is gonna suck though as it leaves the average joe-schmoe like me with shallow pockets, but I can't wait to hear those true duals on the LS1. Ford has run out of ideas so they have to go retro........the T-Bird is ugly and now it's dead in another year, the GT (GT-40) and the '05 Mustang look really nice though, but they still could have come up with a more modern look.
