It really has gotten ridiculous; too bad the auto companies can't direct sell. Set the MSRP so dealers can sell 1k lower. That would end it.

But some laws would have to change... they NEED to change.

I pass the local Pontiac dealership and decide to go and see if they have any G8s in stock. They have a beautiful G8 GT loaded. It is Metallic Grey (the color I would want) and it has the whole sport package. Very sharp looking car for sure. Overall, I like the exterior of the G8 better than my GTO but the interior wasn't that much better than that of my GTO. In some areas, I like the GTO interior better. Anyway, I ask the sales guy if the '09 GXP is still on track and he says yes. I tell him I look forward to the GXP and that I may trade my GTO in for it. That effectively lets him know to leave me alone to look over the G8 GT. This is where is gets good. The sticker price is $31,xxx. I was shocked. Great deal for all of the features you get. Then there is a little sticky next to the sticker that says "A.D.M. $6995" which brings the total price to about $38,500 (I could probably step into a decent 335i for that price). I then go up to the front desk where the salesmen are gathered and the conversation proceeds as follows:

Me: Does A.D.M. mean additional dealer markup?

Old salesman: Yes it does.

Me: Why are you charging a $7000 markup?

Old salesman: Because this is the 1 of the first 888 cars in America

Me: You know there are other dealerships that do not have a markup right? I would rather just wait a few months or a year.

Young cocky salesman (in a sarcastic tone): Well there are other dealerships getting the markup so we are keeping it as is!

Me: Yeah, good luck with that (as I exit the dealership literally laughing)

What is this dealership thinking? Did they not learn from the GTO? This is a working man's performance sedan. No middle class working man is going to fork over an extra $7000 for a car that is going to be mass produced only to have that extra $7000 plus the normal depreciation hit right when driving it off the lot. I just thought that by now dealers would understand that they should be pushing these cars and getting them on the road. Asking for a $7000 markup especially with these gas prices is just nuts. I bought my GTO from this dealer back in '05 and got a great deal. It just gets me mad.

On a side note, a lady was admiring my GTO in the parking lot and told me how nice it was .
I posted my story of how a Pontiac dealer out here (even named names) also jacked a G8 GT (base model, 32K sticker) up to 38K and it was dismissed by someone as something that only happens in California.

Thre are many Pontiac dealers everywhere (outside of Cali) that simply "Don't get it". Here is a brand new Pontiac sedan that costs less than a Charger R/T, but is being priced right up there in Charger SRT-8 territory thanks to quite a few Pontiac dealers.

A Ford dealer here in a strong Mustang market can sell a relatively rare, low production Mustang Bullitt for a modest $2900 markup, yet the Pontiac dealer across the street throws a $5K markup on a volume sports sedan. Go figure.

I know a few dealers that let GTOs rot on the lot with markups until GM gave them incentives to sell it. They simply didn't order any more GTOs.

Funny thing is they blamed the slow sales on the car itself, just like "Soul Strife" mentioned.

You'll have to forgive the Pontiac dealerships. It's been so long since any of them have sold a car that they must have forgotten how a sale actually goes

personally, i dont too much care for the G8 or the GTO for that matter (my uncle has the GTO and his brother the Manaro) just doesnt look like a sports/muscle car..

but i agree the dealers are straight up dumb, i remember the chevy dealer (same owner as the pontiac and saturn dealers) had a used 1995 (auto) Camaro Z28 (115 spedo version) on sale for $12,xxx!!! it had over 100,000 miles and was an ugly blue! no mods no nothing!! I mean WTF, i went up to them and was lke "thats twice its value..." they're response? "well when it comes to classic muscle cars like this fine Z, kbb and nada dont accurately portray the true value, as over time it increases"

wtf.

and guess what about 2 months later, it was gone idk what happened to it

i hope they just auctioned it off, unless some really pathetic kid bought it...

Exclamation

The question is..do these Pontiac dealers think they are getting a low production car? A special car? or what? For them to ADM them like this?

sad really..GM can push it..but its the dealers that push back..

Anti-trust laws so that the manufacturer can't under-cut the independent retailer.

Keep in mind this goes both ways: The G8 has the jackup, but would you pay MSRP for the G6? Not when the indpendant pontiac dealer across town is willing to wheel-and-deal.

Just gotta get the word out..

Hell how bout a black list?? and a good dealer list..

then email it to the dealer that they are on the black list to avoid on many forums for such a car...and that 2-3 area Pontiac dealers are doing good to the customer!
Might change thier mind?

I tell you the Camaro is right around the corner..if this G8 is any scale of how the dealer is going to react to a special car..then the Camaro is in trouble..

Yes.

They don't understand that what may be good for them in the EXTREMELY short term is horrible for GM and themselves in the long term.

The G8 shouldn't have ANY markup on it. It's not a "special" car - it's a volume sedan. It fills the spot that the Grand Prix held. I would go into the dealership every week and let them know what a mistake they're making.

I have a different take on this- I do not agree with it (which is why I just bought a Daytona R/T) but I think the mentality is that the dealers do NOT want to sell this car. If some of these dealers are only getting one or two V8 G8's this year they want to keep them there as long as possible purely to get traffic through the door.

Don't like or appreciate it- but I would bet that is part of the motiation. I could be wrong because I saw dealers with 7 GTO's not coming off the price in 04-06.

Maybe the dealers will beat the G8 into submission before it even has a chance to get off the ground kinda liek they did with the GTO...

Then, after the G8 is declared a failure, maybe I can get a G8 lease like I did for my 04 GTO too... I liked that $220 lease payment

Thankfully, the purchase of my girlfriend's Solstice came from a sales guy who was actually a friend of the family. When we were serious about it, it was still 3K over sticker so we held off. A few months later, we got it at sticker + $1,000 GM points + rebate of 1 payment of her former Pontiac lease (G6).

Hell, the only way at that time she could have test drove one is at that dealer because the salesman was a friend of the family. All other dealers wanted a deposit to test drive one.
