Another thing dealerships are probably doing to mark up the G8 (They did it with the GTO and Solstice) is add all types of crap such as roadblock, R2000 and any other thing they can do to get the price up. Then these cars sit on the lots and dealers **** and moan that they can't sell them.

I'm not just speculating about this. It has already happened, a few years ago, about different cars. I don't have the details -- perhaps someone else knows.

 

Thats what I mean Jake..us..well like Poncho sites or G8 sites. or even here.what are they gonna sue? Sue for what telling the customer where to get the best deal? How bout we sue them for extortion...

and yea that would be a cool thing for Jason to do around here for the Camaro..

I agree that any dealer that would go and mark up a much needed vehicle to 5-7 just for profit..I dont think they would second thought suing for basically telling the truth..
and the legal problems would be the problem yes.. in the end would Jason and company win..sure but to have the problem?? Nahh..
Unless there are some good lawyers on this site that would work for free..

and the other thing the news would get around and make the dealer look real bad..
But in a way your right..maybe just a "good dealer" list..

One bright area.

San Francisco dealer has a G8 GT in the showroom. Base $29K model. Only one they have. $2,000 markup.

Final sticker price: 31K. Perfectly reasonable for one of the country's most expensive cities and the only G8 in the building.

Then again, it's not really a Pontiac dealer. It's a GM dealer. Sells Cadillacs, Pontiacs, GMCs, Saturns, but mostly Chevrolets. Rarely see Buicks there.

 

I work at a pontiac dealer in west phoenix AZ...So far we have gotten 3 loaded g8s....One was ordered sold for sticker.....not sure about other one that we sold and third is in the showroom with 2500 markup...Was told markup was to try and keep car on display for awhile until we get more.......I still dont like the mark up but could be worse i suppose....
Im not ready to give up my gto for one yet...

 

See, that makes sense to me. The cars are a lot harder to sell if you don't have one on display, so it makes sense that the dealer would want a bit of extra money to part with his only display model. It's not a market adjustment so they can take your money -- it's a deterrent so that people won't want to buy that one car.

 

Are you allowing anyone to test drive a G8 GT? I understand keeping one to sell from, but how do dealers expect to sell cars without a test drive? I might "tag" a car that's on the way (if they would sell at no more than MSRP), but I'm certainly not going to do that without having driven one. They say it's to "keep the joy-riders from putting miles on a car they aren't going to buy," but seems to me they could screen folks good enough to keep that from happening. A few bad apples, I guess...

 

Its been in and out of the showroom a few times...Im not in sales so im not sure but i would guess if you show your serious they would let you drive it........With the economy right now they are happy to sell anything..

 

I walked into my local Pontiac dealer to see if they had any G8s around. They had 2 black on black v6s. The red GT that was there at lunch time must have been a sold unit, as it was gone when I went in.

Gotta say, I was surprised how small (outside) the car seemed. All the pics and complaining on here about size made me think it was going to be charger size or bigger. It seemed to be 'just right' on the outside and pleanty big on the inside (very comfy for me at 6'4". Just wish the side bolsters were a little closer in (I'm 185lbs). The interior was very well done IMO, large trunk and no ADMs, though these were V6s.

The 2 ppl I talked to in the showroom seemed very knowlegable about the car, when the 09s were coming out, (they are only getting a few more 08 GTs in apparently) and as far as they know, the 09s will have 6MTs available. They weren't pushy and at least gave the appearance of caring, which according to this site seems to be all too rare.

We'll see if the salesman gives me a call when their next GT comes in, hopefully I'll get a drive

 

Anti-trust is complicated, but the upshot seems to be that the manufacturer can't undersell the MSRP. Outlet stores are generally a set distance away from other retailers and/or only carry discontinued merchandise.

I'm not sure if the auto industry is special. Their dealer contracts are probably more complicated, but I don't know if there's particular laws aimed at them. GM probably made the business decision to stay out of retail. (Fbodyfather has said that GM had tried it and lost millions.)

Indeed. Not me, personally... it's not my style.

Having said that, I'm still wary that others around me would sue me for something stupid, and I'd rather just not do that and then not have to deal with the lawsuit.

Sometimes I wonder if I'd get along better in Australia.

When I worked for Saturn when the Sky arrived, they did the same thing, kept one they refused to sell for 6 months and sold the rest for sticker, or ran on order only untill they met demand and built an inventory. The near by Saturn dealer was charging crazy markup with all kinds of crap tacked on

In the end the rush is over and they have quite the inventory of SKY's now that havent moved in a wile I always knew that would just be a fad car then drop out like crazy!
