The Power of 2016 Z6?

How much power to you think that the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro V6 model will have when it arrives?

The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS will most likely be powered by the same LT1 that powers the current 2014 and 2015 Corvette Stingray fastback and convertible. In Corvette duty, the new LT1 packs 455 or 460 horsepower and 460 or 465lb-ft of torque depending on whether or not the performance exhaust package is chosen. Considering that the current Camaro SS shared a V8 engine with the previous “base” Corvette with power ratings which were very similar, we can expect that the 6th generation Camaro in SS form will pack somewhere in the area of 450 horsepower (if not slightly more). That figure will likely be more than enough to give the Camaro SS a healthy advantage over the Mustang GT, but it will also create a huge gap in performance between the base Camaro V6 models and the Camaro SS. This massive difference in power between the standard V6 and V8 models could hurt the sales numbers of the V6 models – and that is a problem that GM will need to address in order to maintain their stranglehold of the muscle car segment.

Re: The Power of 2016 Z6?

In 2010, the SS had 426hp and the V6 had 306. In 2013 (or maybe it was 2012, I forget), the V6 got bumped to 323 (an additional 17hp), while the SS remained at 426. I don't recall anyone saying anything about a noticeable effect coming from the slight closure of the horsepower gap.

Now, the V8 is expected add about 24 more horsepower, bringing the gap back to its initial 2010 level and a little beyond. I really don't think this is going to have any noticeable effect at all on the V6-V8 sales distribution.

Furthermore, I strongly object to this:

If this does hurt V6 sales, it would be because buyers choose V8 Camaros instead. How does that hurt Camaro? It should result in the same number of sales (possibly more, if the changes pull some would-be Mustang or Challenger buyers), and higher average transaction prices.

I agree, I don't see this as, or going to be a problem. The 6th Gen. Camaro is should be considerable lighter than the current Zeta based 5th gen. Performance is going to be enhanced in the base models even if the car retains the LFX 3.6 V6 at the same power levels.

I think the real news for the 6th Gen power will be if it gets the Turbo 2.0L engine from ATS Coupe. That will say a lot about the 6th Gen dynamics if that engine can bring in some excitement to the base car.

Depending on who you believe, the 2.0T is going to be the base engine in the 6th Gen. This is pretty high risk/high reward for Chevy, considering Ford didn't have the guts to make their Ecoboost 4 the base engine for the new Mustang. It will be very interesting to see whether this is a huge marketing win for Chevy or not. But I have to believe (and at least one other insider has confirmed it elsewhere) that Chevy would not do a 4 cylinder base car if it was so anemic that it dragged down the entire brand. Heck, I have even seen it said that the 2.0T Camaro would be just as much fun to drive, if not more, than the current Camaro SS (I am assuming they mean from a "tossibility" standpoint).

I have the 2.0T ATS and it's nothing short of a splendid engine. Great gas mileage too. If the next gen Camaro is going to be running the approx weight range of the ATS, I see no reason why it shouldn't be in the next Camaro line up. (unless its a pricey engine)

If the 6th Gen Camaro gets the 2.0L Turbo then that says to me that GM feels it can power and perform up to Camaro sporty standards as the base engine. That would mean that the alpha based 6th Gen is light and hopefully nimble which will be a great thing for all of us. Performance and EPA numbers too.
