Trunk vs. Hatch, Which one to use on 5th Gen?
It’s been thrown around a lot lately by some how much better and important it is to incorporate a trunk into the 5th gen. This may have been discussed before but I can help wondering….
Why?
Style?
More Functional?
I can’t think of a good reason to use a trunk over a hatch….
So I got to thinking about it. I’ve owned two daily drivers.
My ’95 Camaro and my ’00 Grand Prix.
Well functionally the ’95 has way more advantages. Folding down the rear seat I could fit a ton more stuff compared to my current GTP which routinely has to have stuff stored in the back seat from lack of room in the trunk. Plus it was much easier to place larger items in and take out of the Camaro’s hatch.
Style wise, well “design” is a personal preference so I can’t really touch that however it could be argued that incorporating a hatch into the 5th gen would be a heritage cue.
Though I’ve heard on here that hatched are dated and shouldn’t be used today.
So what do you think, hatch or trunk?
My vote is with Hatch.

Trunk. Hands down.
After owning a hatched back car for 10+ years, I hope I'll never own another one.
Why can't the new Camaro be a fastback with a trunk like the 2nd gens were, or like the new Mustang is?

I prefer a hatch actually. When a Camaro is your only car, like mine was until recently, it makes a huge difference. I've actually fit a 12'x11' roll of carpet into my car. This alone makes it worth while in my opinion. It's one of the main reasons I originally chose a Camaro over Mustang.
One argument against a hatch is that it doesn't contrubute to chassis rigidity. Packaging issues in the 4th and 3rd gens could be corrected in a 5th gen so that the liftover height isn't so bad.
I did rent a mustang on a trip once, so I had a chance to try the trunk on that. I could barely get my duffle bag to fit in the opening it was so narrow. If that's what a trunk would be like, count me out.

I voted trunk, but I'd really like to see a fast back design, kinda like the 2nd gen cars or (don't flame me) the Beretta. I really liked the way the rear glass flowed into the truck lid on those cars.
Trunk with fast back stying and folding seats for one reason: increased structural rigidity without adding alot of weight (or possibly dropping a few pounds off a similar hatchback design). You can put a cross member at the base of the rear glass, which you can't with a hatch unless you do what Nissan did with the 350Z, with then negates any benefits of a hatch.
This is me outweighs the advantages of a hatch I've reaped over the last 8 years.

I think you can accomplish about the same thing with a hatch as you can with a trunk with back seats that fold down.
I'm pretty much indifferent too, but I voted trunk.
We've had hatch since 1982, so lets try something different.

I voted trunk for three main rasons.
1) The large expanse of back glass made the cabin, specifically the back seat, literally feel like a greenhouse. Even when cool outside, if the sun was shining it really heated up the interior(those who live in Colorado know the it's 10 degrees outside and the sun is shining, BRIGHTLY).
2) the strut's on the rear glass ALWAYS go out
3)We need a speaker shelf, I didn't really like the speakers in the b pillars on my '91.

LOl, ok I feel stupid. the struts in the rear glass worked fine, it was the hood struts. I should lay off posting when I am not really paying attention to what the hell I am writing
