Red face Ummm..just a thought..GTO replacement for Grand Prix in NASCAR???

Just wondering...could the new GTO be the body style for Pontiac to get the GTO going? just wondering..is it possible to see it in NASCAR??
do the guys from OZ have a race car series like NASCAR down there and already have the shells??
curious and also wouldnt be bad to have an actual two door in the group..since the 2 door GP is going the way of the dodo..
but how well would a %50 US and %50 OZ car be to the good old boys in the racing circut..

I dont follow Nascar, but I think the car used has to be a high volume seller(100,000+ units). I dont really understand it though, since the car used in NASCAR is absolutely nothing like the one on the street.

I don't think the GTO is on GM's radar screen for NASCAR use. First of all, the new GP is basically ready for next year, so that body will have a good 3 year life span.

Second, Joe Gibbs racing announced they are switching to Chevy bodies for '03 because the GP has too much of an aero push when in traffic. That leaves only two teams using pontiacs for next year (MB2 motorsports runs Pontiacs for ken Schrader and Johnny Benson, and there is anothe 1 car team I think). NASCAR has some sort of rule that I think a make has to have at least 5 cars in the series..they are two short right now. If they can't convince anybody to switch, they may be out. Rumor is there is a dodge team about to annonce the switch, though.

As for IROC...that's a very good question. The IROC rights usually run for 5 year blocks. Pontiac is now in its 6th year, which is unusual. I wonder if they'll run the dead-on-arrival TA body another year or two until the 5th gen Camaro is done?????? or the GTO????

Don't forget, for a period during the 80's they ran Dodge's FWD Daytonas, therefore it wouldn't be out of the question for them to run GrandAms, Cavaliers, or even Stratus coupes.

GM, could run Impala's in NASCAR or even Seville STS's if they wanted. NASCAR has the backbone of an wet dish towel. All their rules are only rules until challenged. They used to restrict cars to rwd, 2dr coupes. Well guess what Ford and Dodge have never built a 2dr rwd Taraus or Intrepid. Chevy and Pontiac are only a little better because atleast the body is more true to the real car, 2dr. If Dodge said we want to run Prowlers in NASCAR, you would see it! This crap that NASCAR somehow uses sales as a rule is crap. That ended in the mid to late 80's when the Monte Carlo and GP's were loosing to the new T-birds and GM quickly developed an Aero coupe with a sloped rear window for better aerodynamics. GM stuck to the 500 models of each car for a few years but then told NASCAR to shove it! And kept on racing. NASCAR said nothing. The only reason NASCAR has the models it has it because they are all the bread and butter family coupes and sedans that the Brands want to sell to eveyone. Win on Sunday sell on Monday. Or so they wish.

I think Gibbs Racing is so stupid because the new 03 GP is ready and the new body ready for NASCAR has already been approved. And the word is its just as slick as the Intrepid. Whats Gibbs going to do next year when the GP's are running better than he does. The Monte Carlo is not a better race car right now but DEI, Childress has some slick slick ideas for areo and some real stong motors. But they have been working at this like crazy. The other Chevy teams have not fared so well. Gibbs just expects to jump over and win. If he was smart he go for Ford because NASCAR will keep helping them with aero until they win the Winston Cup. Atleast then his complaints would get answered like Rusty's do!

Thumbs down

NASCAR sucks, I really hope GM wouldn't tarnish the GTO name by throwing it into winston cup.

Now that would be a tragedy.

IROC would be a good place for it though.

NASCAR has turned into professional wrestling. Those cars only share the hood, trunk, & roof outer skins and the quarter window sheetmetal with the stock cars. That's it.
I'd rather watch a true showroom stock class.
Take a brand new GP. Put a roll cage, belts, and sticky tires on it, and stick it on the track. No other modifications. I don't care if it's slow. To me, that would say something about the car.

Toyota is not in NASCAR...that was a rumor. They are still RUMORED to be interested in the truck series, but for now they don't have any designs on Busch or Cup.

Agreed Childress and DEI have the best speedway cars of anybody, not just Chevys (those are my teams ), but its also true the Monte body isn't as good as the Taurus or the Intrepid in terms of total downforce (which is funny because the big trunk hump was supposed to help downforce).

NASCAR is awesome and I thoroughly enjoy it, but lets call a spade a spade. These are not "stock" cars in the way everybody thinks of. The term has morphed over the last 20 years to mean a fully enclosed car resembling a production vehicle.

I have seen toyota running some kind of celica in some series, I dont know which it is. I saw it on the Speed channel. I think Nascar would be better off just issuing standard indentical cars to the drivers on the day of the race, that seems to be what they want to do. As soon as one make gets an advantage from hard work and research, Nascar just negates it by making the other cars even again..this is dumb.

They were running it in the goodie dash series...

It was a previous gen Celica though because NASCAR wouldnt approve the edgy one.

Actually the edgy, new bodystyle celica (current celica) is out there, racing. I don't know the series, but I have seen it plenty of times on speed vision, even 2 days ago.

I didn't even think about the Dash series. So, OK, they are in NASCAR, but the Goody's dash series is far from big time. That series is full of Sunfires, Cavaliers and now Celica's I guess.
