Re: Camaro Podcast #319 - Camaro ZL1 Vert, SEMA, and BBOMG 4.
I think anyone would be nuts to think that the ZL1 is going to be less than 55K. 60K is probably an even safer bet.
Decently Loaded 2SS Coupe is already in the neighborhood of 40K.
Decently Loaded 2SS Convertible is around 45K
A pretty standard CTS-V Coupe is around 66K
The Corvette ZR1 (3ZR) stars at 122K
Now you really can't compare to the ZR1 since the LS9 is a somewhat different animal and also a different price point. But the Gen3 version of Magnetic Ride that resides on the ZL1 is state-of-the-art and an upgrade compared to the ZR1 and CTS-V's Gen2 system. So, you can assume there may be a jump in cost on the new suspension system.
If you opt for the automatic transmission. There are selectible shift modes that come with that which may even be controlled by a separate controller outside the car's ECU. I'm guessing a premium cost for that as well.
You've also got an aluminum hood with a carbon fiber insert, special ground effects, front splitter and spoiler. The interior has that fake suade stuff. A flat bottom steering wheel, ZL1 specific shifter for the manual-6 cars.
Yes, they have to stay competitive with the GT-500, but this is a whole nother level of car. The GT-500 is not much more than a Mustang GT with a supercharger and fatter tires. If that car is already around 50K base and really has no technology in it besides horsepower, you can only imagine what the ZL1 will bring to the table in cost.
I would take the price of the CTS-V and suptract a few thousand just because you're not getting a level of luxury or paying for the higher dollar name. But i still say 60K is the number you're looking at. And just because that is not necessarily in price point with the GT-500 doesn't mean a thing. GM is setting a standard with this car and really brings the high performance muscle car into a whole new genre! They have control at this point, the price of the GT-500 is a moot point because this machine is going to be amazing for those who can get their hands on one and take our favorite car's level of excitement to a whole new level!
