Sony Class D amps
Anyone else here dealt with sony's new class D amps? On boxing day they had a a sony xm-1600GSD on sale at a local car audio store. I thought about it for a while and did some research on the internet (I was pretty worried about buying a sony amp) and ended up gettting one. I bought the in store 2 year no questions asked extended warranty for it just incase, in the end it came out to $315CAD ($200USD) with taxes and warranty. Pretty good deal for an amp that puts out 300W RMS@4ohms, 600W RMS@2ohms and 1000W RMS@1ohm. I've read that they have been tested to 700W RMS@2ohms. I also couldn't find anyone who had problems with the sony class D amps.
Anyway, my cousin also bought one for his WRX along with a couple of 4ohm DVC 12" Alpine Type-S'. I installed his stuff about 2 weeks ago with all voice coils in parallel for a 1ohm load and he hasn't had any problems so far, I can't believe how much this amp puts out and I haven't felt it even get hot yet. I installed mine about a week ago and currently only have it running a 2ohm load (2 4ohm SVC drivers). I use to have 2 class a/b kenwood amps running my subs (one on each) and they were rated at 300W RMS each so I figured there wouldn't be much difference in output with the new amp since it should put out the same power. Well the new amp definately puts out more and is much more efficient. I get much less voltage drop and more output now. I'm also running my infinity components with one of my old sub amps now, they use to get 50W RMSx2 and now get double the power. They sound much better and get a lot louder with the power increase.
So far I'm pretty impressed with the amp. I'm not sure how long it will hold up but since I have the 2 year warranty I'm not too worried. This is the 3rd sony component in my system and it seems to be of decent quality. My sony HU also seems to be pretty good, I've yet to have problems with it and my Sony EQ works great even though it's the oldest part of my system. I wonder if Sony is actually starting to get their act together?

Exactly! As long as everything is holding up and you are happy.... nothing else matters....
I have had problems with multiple sony head units.... and no actual problems with their speakers... they just sounded like poop. No experience with their amps.....

not to flame anyone hear, but i work at a home theatre store, which we also do repairs. we have about 400 tv's and misc. items in here for repair right now. my point is be carefull with sony, some stuff is good, some is bad. they espically have problems with solder connections. if you have an amp that fails, and it is not under warranty anymore, you may be able to open it up and resolder loose connections.
