Question 78 camaro frankenstein engine

i have a '78 camaro that has a 305 engine but 350 vortec on top. What good will it do to have the 350 vortec on a 305 lower?

hmm. The only real difference is you will have larger head chambers on the 350 heads. (305 = 3.67 bore while the 350 has a 4" bore). Other than that everything is identical. So the intake and all of that is not really a "350" intake it is a SBC vortec intake. That includes ALL small block v8 engines up to 400ci.

My question you you, I take it you bought the car this way? Are you positive you have what you think you do? Pretty common to have people try to sell something as something it is not in older cars like that. The one thing to think about is that you can not have as big of valves in a 305 as in the 350.

I'll pull the numbers off the engine when i get home. I had a guy look at it and tell me that it was a 305 with a 350 on top. The guy selling it just said it was a 305.

In order to know the heads you would have to take a valve cover off to see what they are stamped (I think, it might be on the end of the head as well, check there first).

A 350 top does not mean alot, since most everything in the v8 SBC area is pretty much interchangeable in the gen 1 engines. The only bugger is the chamber and valves in the head were smaller in the 305 due to it having a smaller bore.

Not all 305's had smaller chambers. most 305 and 350's had identical heads. Same valves, chamber sizes, everything. Most people call tbi heads vortecs so don't take it as anything. Crap on top of crap is still crap. true vprtec heads only have 8 intake bolts. if they have anymore they are probably stock crap heads and make no power difference than the stock 305 heads. sorry. if you find a 96 up truck motor with vortecs. swap it with a newer intake and be amazed at the difference
