Post btw, how high can you rev a 403 w/ stock pistons, rods+crank?

just curious, i think my stock redline is like 5000. but, ive converted the valve train to an adjustable setup, w/ roller tip rockers, stiffer single springs, and 10* locks. the valve train is by comp cams, its the comp-1441-kit, and the cam is a Crane powermax 216/228 and .484/.512 @ 0.050" w/ Rhoades lifters.

id like to set my rev limiter to 5500 at least, and shift at 5200-5300. i wanted to put a governor in my Th350 and 200-4r so that it would automatically shift @ 5300, just incase i got distracted...im so used to driving an RX7 and shifting at 8k... go figure.

thanks
chris

Everything I've found in the Mondello tech manual and on the internet on various Olds forums says anything over 5000 and you run a real chance of blowing the bottom end. The windowed mains just won't take the stress above that point. There are some people who will sell you a billet steel cradle for the bottom end to make this problem go away, but unless you building a serious drag car out of it with the 403, it probably isn't worth it. If you're serious about this motor, check out www.mondellotwister.com and read the links for Articles and Olds Links. You can find a lot of interesting information on the articles page where there are several articles posted about Olds engine rebuilds and 403 rebuilds.

ok. i thought i heard **** miller say that the olds motors couldnt be revved over 5500. at that point, the oil in the crank passageways reverses direction, and starves the bearings. and he sells some kinda restrictor plug and recommeneds a high volume/high pressure pump to keep this from happening.

i was worried about not being able to run the engine up to the power peak. dyno2000 is showing me the peak HP coming on @ 4500-5000. but, if i go by the torque curve, it starts to fall off after 4500, it drops almost 40 lb/ft...down from ~400 to ~360.

im just trying to see where my operating range is, so i can pick out my rev limiter and tranny governor.

thanks guys
