Gauge Mounting on Driver's A Pilliar 68
Has anyone ever mounted gauges on the driver's side A pilliar on a 68 Camaro? I have autometer 5in Tach and Speedo in the cluster, and 4 2in autometer gauges in the center console (I have a 4 pod cluster from a Company that fabricated it to fit the center console on 1st generation Camaros- very similiar to the one that Autometer just developed). I want to add two more gauges - but Autometer does not make a pod to specifically fit on a 68 Camaro. I have spoken to their tech department - and they stated that nothing is currently in the works. I wanted to know - if any one has retro-fit a dual autometer pod for another car the A Pilliar on a 68 Camaro.
Thanks

I looked for a pillar mount for my 70, and didn't find anything.. I considered finding a car with a similar sized post and just mod it, but I am going to just build a custom dash instead.
The pods are made of plastic, so you should be able to cut and modify it to fit.. I would guess a mustang or monte carlo would have the closet angle on the windsheild post..
The other option I thought about would be to take a stock pillar cover, remove the pad, and then weld up some cups and paint it.. I don't know how that would look tho..

hears away to do it easy
About 5 years ago i mounted to gauges in my post using fiberglass. Its really easy and cheap. Plus you get the satisfaction of say I made it.
Here's how you do it. First take the piller pad and while its on the car wrap it in aluminum foil. Then take and tape fiberglass cloth on the foil and apply just enough resin to soak the cloth so it will hold form when it gets hard. Now you can take the pad off and leave the fiberglass shell on it to keep the pad in the shape it has when installed. This is important because the pad moves allot when its installed. Now secure the pad in the shell you created and tape it tight in there (dont use to much tape tho. Wrap in aluminum foil and use glass and cloth to make a mold of the backside. After the mold drys remove the pad and reinforce the backside mold by adding cloth and resin to the side that will not be up against the car. make sure the mold mounts well.
Once you have the back side mold now the fun part. Mount gauge cups useing hot glue and popsicle sticks in the desired positions. After this is done take cheap speaker cloth and wrap the pilller with it ( i used two wraps for strength). Another option is to use spray on expandale foam but you need to shape that stuff and the speaker cloth more or less forms itsself in a nice smoth shape just by wrapping. Now just apply resin to the cloth when the resin hardens your set. Use enough resin at this point to just soak the cloth. Cut out the cloth which covers the top of the cups and apply more resin and fiberrglass cloth as needed to strength. mount gauges wrap in vinly and your done.
THis is basically a modifaction on how to make custom speaker enclosures. If you search the web you can find some pics showing someone makeing speaker enclosers pretty easy. That might give you some more idea on how to do it.
Good luck
