96 LT1 car quit running
My car is a 96 LT1. I was driving last night and at 40 mph the car just quit like the key was turned off. I had 35 lb of fuel pressure. I put a new coil and still nothing. There is no spark. The opti spark is new. Please help, Thanks Lee

Just a couple of thoughts, have you checked the Ignition module? Or the fuses for the pcm? Are any of the connectors broken or loose/corroded wire terminals inside for the Opti or coil?

Have you had it scanned for codes? Loss of low res pulse from the Opti will shut it down, because the PCM shuts down the fuel system.
If nothing shows up in a scan you've got to verify the engine is getting fuel and spark, systematically working your way through both systems.

Re: 96 LT1 car quit running
Here's what I have done. I put a new coil, new crank sensor, and a new ICM. I checked all the fuses and they were good. I pulled a spark plug and it was wet. Whats next? Optispark? If the computer has been reworked, will it still show codes through the scanner? Thanks for all the help, Lee

Re: 96 LT1 car quit running
Depends what you mean by "reworked". If you have custom programming, it will not affect the operation of a scanner.
Did you check the harness connectors for the Opti for corrosion?

Re: 96 LT1 car quit running
40 mph the car quit. No sign of any problems. I took the opti spark out and the cap was cracked on the outside and inside, the rotor and what ever was in side was in pieces. I don't know if there was something cracked inside and it let loose or maybe it was dropped. I bought it new from GM when I re-did the motor. If it can happen it will happen to me. Thanks Lee

Re: 96 LT1 car quit running
I've had that happen to my 95' Z28 when the car had 60k miles on it. Later after that happend I lost my ICM and pulled the Opti in the process of tracking down my problem to find a half chewed rotor and cap in the Opti.
Still absolutely no reason I can find for that to happen, but it has. Oh well, wish I would've seen your post sooner so I could've given you this bit of info before you tossed out some money.

Re: 96 LT1 car quit running
OK guys I need help. Out tonight after installing new opti spark and the car was running fine. Was on my way to local airport to go get some gas and down shifted to 3rd gear from 4th at 45 mph. Wound the car up to 6000rpm in the 3rd and the car backfired and quit just like before. What is going on? Is the cam walking? The trust plate for the cam is in there. I just don't know. When I put the new opti spark in place I checked to make sure it wasn't binding againt the cam dowl. It slide in with no problem. Hope someone has an answer, Thanks Lee
