(ATT. ANDREW)Erasing 93 EPROM Chip question...

I know for an EPROM chip I'll have to buy an eraser, but I heard I could replace the EPROM chip with an EEPROM chip?

Is this possible? If so, would the Pocket Programmer II erase EEPROMs?

Also could someone explain this Memcal thing to me? I read the 3rdgen.org tutorial and a few others, but am confused a little bit... would this allow for programming the chip while in the PCM... help please, thanks.

Oh yeah, Andrew (AKMCables) I was wondering how much you would charge me for the cable and not the OBD-I connector? Thanks. I got an OBD-I connector (Snap-On scanner) that I'm gonna see if it works to save me some $.

Yes, you can replace the EPROM with an EEPROM. You will have to desolder/resolder though.
The PPII will erase EEPROMs.

The MEMCal is the brown plastic cartridge with a blue top that contains 2 circuits, one of which is the EPROM.

Replacing the EPROM with an EEPROM will not allow you to program while it's in the PCM.

Andrew rarely reads this board, so I'd recommend emailing him directly.

Paul,
if I remember correctly, you once said that a 94 tach won't work in a 93. I recalled about that too late, after installing a complete 96 cluster in my 93 project. So my tach doesn't work now.
My question to you is, if you did this swap already.. can you just swap the tach unit, or do you have to swap the whole thing?
I've taken a cluster appart before, but I don't remember this very well anymore.
Thanks.

You have a good memory! That was a LONG time ago, well of course you can get it to work, just take apart both clusters and use the 93 circuit board(complete backing) and the 96 plastic face.

I'm thinking about 97+ cluster Next I just custom molded a 10.5" lcd where the radio used to be! Moved the radio into the A/C controls! Now where can I stash these A/C controls... Hmmm..

So would you recommend me buying an eraser or doing the MEMcal w/ eeprom? Or am I still confused.... because the way I read it, I either buy an eraser to reuse EPROMs or I get this MEMcal thing to use with ... Thanks.

OK.. one more question... did the temperature gauge work ok after the board swap? The 94+ ones start at 160...

Either way, to answer your question, I'd say go with the flash chip. It saves you time mainly and also some money.

I noticed that, If I remember right the 93s start @ 180, correct? I'm not sure, but I'd think the temp gauge would be 20 degrees less. Since you're not changing the guts of the cluster, just the display...

Looks better in my opinion though... now if I can get my Overlay guages I've been waiting for the past month from S/R Motorsports!
