I checked the voltage between pins 5 and 9, and I read about 4V, so I bought the cable you recommended. I really appreciate your software (and advice) being free, especially when someone is making a fortune on a GM OBDI cable ($60 + $30 tax and shipping)! Thanks again for your help.
You are right. The makers of the cables in my link know they have the only real game in town and are milking it,
Here is the deal. The company, FTDI, that invented the hardware for the newer version of the cable is waging a war against the Chinese for stealing their design. If you want to go with a DYI cable I would try the basic element from them: https://ftdichip.com/products/ttl-232r-5v/

I'm having a helluva time getting a COM port set up on my new/refurbed Lenovo Windows 11 laptop.

if you want to make your own cable here are the parts you need:
FTDI Serial TTL-232 USB Cable
https://www.adafruit.com/product/70
OLLGEN Auto Car OBD2 16 Pin Connector
https://a.co/d/1JPHN7a
orange & yellow = pin 9
black = pin 4 & 5
this uses a "Genuine FTDI Chip" Plus the USB Plug has TX/RX LED's so you know if its talking to the computer..

Re: Scan9495: Free OBD1 scan app for 93/94/95 LT1
So I've been reading everything about scan9495 over the last two days and found that you can use it to scan the abs module on a 96. I have a 96 lt1 and did a diy cable. I used the loopback test and I get the numbers showing up. I have checked the voltage between pins 4 and 9 and 5 and 9. Both show around 4V. I cannot get scan9495 to connect. I have tried using windows 10 as well as windows 7 in a virtual machine. I also saw where an obdlink sx cable would work so I tried that as well. What Am I missing?

I figured it out about 10 minutes ago. I was not getting the 4v at the ftdi chip so I double checked the rx, tx, and gnd and realized the wiring color code for the OBD2 pigtail I used was wrong. Manually pinned out the connector to get the right colors and BAM worked instantly. On a second note. Does anyone know what sequence I could use on the actuators page to simulate a auto bleed?

I don't know the details of installing Scan9495. Normally, I just ask the author to follow up. But he seems hard to get in touch with over the past few months. Like me, he's a retired senior citizen. Hope he's OK.
Let's see if this works.

Re: Scan9495: Free OBD1 scan app for 93/94/95 LT1
After consulting some local career GM guys, the consensus is that the bald cam lobe (intake valve) for the #1 cyl is probably stuck open and not seating. Hence the immediate pressure drop. I just picked up 3 cans of starting fluid so hopefully I can get enough compression to get it started. I got the usb cable together for the scan9495 app but I'm still troubleshooting the com port recognition issue.

Great setup, especially the nice big solder points, I hate soldering. I did have to get the FTDI driver for my ancient Win10 lappy. I wish I knew what more of the values meant. Some of 'em are straightforward. Is there a scan9495 software-specific guide or key of sorts for decipher? It'd be quicker than google . I think I saw a post about Injuneer interpreting results but I don't mind interpreting data as long as I have some context.

Re: Scan9495: Free OBD1 scan app for 93/94/95 LT1
I do interpret data logs for Scan9495 users. But I have cut back because there is a lot of effort and time involved, and people don’t seem to want to follow up if I ask them questions about the vehicle, or they refuse to follow my instructions for running the log. At this point, I am very select about reviewing logs.
Couple of references:
https://www.camaroz28.com/forums/att...canning-r2.pdf
I have never used the Scan9495 software. My 94 Formula underwent a major rebuild in 2000, including a 300-shot of nitrous, a 1000 HP rotating assembly, ported LT4 heads, etc... The engine management was done using a system from MoTeC that allowed a conversion to 8 LSx direct fire coils (before anybody thought of LTCC or 24X conversions), and had the ability to run multiple programs for N/A, 1-stage nitrous, 2-stage nitrous, etc. The system had a full-time, continuous data logging capability. The current owner is happy running 9-second 1/4-miles.
When Scan9495 became available, I paired with GaryDoug so he could take care of the software, cables, install, etc., and I would cover data interpretation. But he has not been available as much lately. Unfortunately the best written reference is the lengthy “sticky” thread at the top of the “Computer Diagnostics……” forum. “Unfortunate” because it follows the evolution of the system over many years. He doesn’t even recommend building your own cable any more, because of the exceptionally poor quality of the available Chinese components. You can find a similar thread on this Firebird Nation site:
