Almost Bald Tires??
i asked a few buddies and got different answers from them all so i guess i have to post.... if i have a set of street tires that are almsot bald... will they hookd better or worse then if they had more tread on them? part of me says 'less tread, closer to a slick' while part of me says 'less tread less traction' i dunno.... what do you guys think? im goin to the track towamrrow mourning, and my back tires are almost bald... the ones up front defiantly have more tread.... should i rotate them? thanks alot

My front sway bar has been removed for several years and I drive to and from the track. Just be careful.
Bald street tires=worn out tires=not good.
The waterbox is a questionmark. A proper watebox only has a very light cover of water. just enough to wet the tires to ease the burnout process. A bad waterbox has a puddle.
Street tires combined with a bad waterbox equals water between the treads of the tires that may or may not spin off depending on the ability of the driver and location of the burnout. The last thing I want to see is an inexperienced driver burning out in a puddle and trailing water all the way to the starting line where he then spins the tires and blames it on poor track prep.
In my mind, I think you should skip the waterbox until you get the appropriate tires. I have used a good waterbox with drag radials in the past with no problem but since you are asking the question, I am recommending driving around the box until you have more experience reading the starting area and have more appropriate tires.

Re: Almost Bald Tires??
Bald street tires are not slicks. If they're old enough to be bald, they're also hard/slippery and dried out. Time to buy some real slicks. If 60' times don't improve, you have a severe problem somewhere else.
If tech is paying attention, they won't let you on the track with bald tires. Even slicks have wear indicators.
