Re: Fastest 4L60E 10 Bolt car?

I'm running 10.80's @ 128mph with 1.47 60ft times using a stock 4L60E trans.
(no shift kit) with a stock converter. I'm also running a stock 3.23 10 bolt rear end. I'm still running the stock cam also.

Re: Fastest 4L60E 10 Bolt car?

I just happened to be talking with my local race shop today about this very subject. First question he asked when I asked how long a 10 bolt would last me was, "Is it a 6-speed? Cuz if it is, it won't last long." He told me the 4L60s are easier on them anyway and a 10 bolt can run a 10 or 11 sec car easy. Btw, these guys build camaro drag cars so they aren't exactly retarded.

Mine's a '94 - the first year they put the 4L60E in an F-Body. See my previous post. Maybe I was just lucky, or maybe it's a question of quality control (or lack thereof) and I happened to get a "good" one, or...??? But I'm aware of several other 94's-95's that have held up reasonably well too, so who knows?

Exactly! I think you'll find that most (not all) of the guys having problems with the 10 bolt are 6 speed cars.

The '94-95's are hit and miss but there are a lot of misses. '96-97 are better and '98 up better yet. Not a hard and fast rule by any means. Some '94-95's last for a couple hundred thousand miles but it's not typical. My car is abused heaily which should be factored in. One year I was at the track almost every wednesday night.

It's good to hear that the stock parts are holding up though. I don't plan to change my rear until it breaks. Actually 4l65es they didnt come in Fbodys they came in trucks and rvs.

If that is true then I'm sorry for the misinformation. Can anyone else confirm this because I think it was a tranny shop rep that told me this.

I thought the 4L65e was designated for trucks also. But I wasn't sure, so I didn't say anything. Might be a good question for a new thread

Re: Fastest 4L60E 10 Bolt car?

I might have made an incorrect assumption when the tranny guy was talking about this tranny (4L65E). But I thought they (GM) were using the 4L80E in the trucks. I know the LS1's are different and they require a different torque converter but I'm not sure exactly what the differences are.

Re: Fastest 4L60E 10 Bolt car?

OK folks we have our answer and it looks like I was wrong.

"The 4L65E transmission (M32 or L65) comes as standard equipment on Hummer H2, Cadillac Escalade, GMC Denali and 6 liter truck applications."

Here is a link for more useful tranny info:

http://www.transmissioncenter.net/ex...duty_parts.htm

I think where I went wrong was the guy said they were using the 4L65E in LS1 f-bodies and I assumed they came as standard equipment but they don't.

Re: Fastest 4L60E 10 Bolt car?

i've had great luck so far with the stock 10 bolt and 3.73 series 2 strange ring/pinion.
i have cut numberous low 1.7's sixty foots without any problems...

now the 4l60e in my car was a peice of junk, it started slipping at 75K miles (when the car was bone stock) and lost 3rd and 4th gear when i put in heads/cam at 77K miles...trans went out 2nd time i went WOT...

i now have a cmotorsports tranny that has done very well, with a 2800 PI tc....

My stock 4L60e lasted longer than that with a 2800 stall converter. I'd have to look in my log book, but I believe it had over 750 runs on it before I had it rebuilt.

Thanks for renewing my faith in the driveline in my car! I know we hear a lot of talk about "10-bolts can't handle the power" and "4L60E's are junk" but I think for the number of BAD cases we hear about, we don't hear about all the GOOD examples of stock cars that stay together.

I don't have "hundreds" of passes on my car (yet!) but I've probably got ~30+, and the transmission is still stock, with adjusted shift points and shift firmness via the Hypertech. I also daily-drive my car, and even MANUALLY SHIFT IT on occasion!! I'm about to roll ~70,000 kms (~43,000 miles) and it's still holding up thus far! I'll let ya know when things start to fall apart though!
