Unhappy First trip to track - horrendous times - Please help

OK. This was my first time ever drag racing at a track. For some background, I have a 95 Impala SS with a T-56, Tri-y's, Flowmasters, and a Team SS intake and cold air box. I still have 3.08s but my posi is fragged so I shall be doing at least 4.10s in the near future and probably ditching my cats again. All runs on 285/40R17 Potenza RE730s. I also need a reprogram for the six speed. Having said that, this was at "Infineon Raceway" (Sears Point). This was bracket racing with the three yellow lights going on sequentially and all that....

I spun only on the last run (a bunch). Oddly enough, all of my sixty foot times were equally awful; regardless of traction. After the launch, I feel that I did rather well. I Powershifted the second and third runs and never missed a shift or anything like that. I am beyond bummed about my trap speed. I was under the impression I was making more power than that. There was a bit of a headwind, but still.....92 mph?!?!?! Arrrrgggh. I drove the **** out of my car and was expecting much better success. Any advice or analysis would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot,

Matt

To tell you the truth, that mph isn't too far off from what I'd expect. Maybe ~ 94-95 mph or so...that could be due to the temp/humidity. That 60' is horrible...get that down to a 2.2 or so and thats a mid 14. Practice.

Thanks for the reply. I kinda figured that was at least part of the problem. I am hoping the 4.10s and both tires doing stuff will help. I still want to burn my car over the trap speed. Oh well.

Those gears should help that car out a lot. Do you have any pics of the center console with the 6 speed in the car?

Hehehe......no. You would not want to see them if I had them. My console is still just a stocker without cupholders and a big, gaping hole. Now, if you are curious about what a nice setup looks like....look here. Thanks again.

The low gears, blown posi,17" radials and 4k lbs arent helping your trap speeds. All in all, thats not a bad time. With good tires, some gears i dont see why it wont be in the 14's,but why so concerned with mph?
From what i see,you dont have any killer performance mods,so the times are about right.

Racin,

Thanks for your reply. You are correct; I do not have any major performance mods (unless the headers are included in that category). The reason(s) I am so concerned about trap speed is that I am aware that trap speed is the more accurate indicator of actual horsepower when compared with ET. My traps are over 2 mph lower than a stock caprice with a T-56 and (I am assuming) intact limited slip with no other mods. This worries me and I am hoping my car does not have something wrong with it. Also, if it is going to take cam and head work to trap what a stock LT1 F-body does, then i am going to shoot the car and then myself...(kidding). Here is a question for you...would my trap speed increase noticably with a better launch? I was under the impression it will not. Thanks again.

Matt

I cant say whether or not your trap's are on par with other 6 speed caprices seeing that i have never seen 1 run(or 1 at all for that matter). Weather looked good so that isnt much of a factor, any headwind?
Also i JUST looked at the 60' times....horrendus.......get the posi fixed, and or get some gears and get that 60' DOWN,once you get a half decent 60' time, you should see a noticeable difference in et/mph.
Also, make sure you dont have any knock, that will kill mph.

There was a considerable headwind. SfGi8nt from this board was there and his prior best was a 102mph trap speed. On this occasion, he trapped 98mph I believe.

I was surprised by the mph too. I am not sure what the corrected time would be but over here, I would expect that car to trap at least 95-97 mph.

I could manage 2.3 60s with a 2.73, auto, tbi 305 with one tire pulling so you definately can improve in that area. Your mph probably won't change but time looks way better. My car actually traps about 1 mph slower when I actually get a good launch as opposed to 2.2-2.3 60s.
