Post gearvenders overdrive and a few A3???s

anyone use the gear venders on a street car that might run high 10s low 11s I am thinking of selling my M6 and getting a turbo 400 but I want OD with my 4.10 gear would you guys put a trans brake on a street car that gets driven less than 100 miles a week and goes on 6 hour trips in the summer? Also how would the rpms at 70mph. Thanks Sean

I love my TH400! However they are not for everyone. At 65mph, I'm crusin around 2800rpms. So at 70, I'd be around 3k. However I do have 3.73 gears also.

As far as a trans break, I have one on a street driven car. Though I'm like you and only drive the car 100 miles a week.

I know if I just used the 400 it would crank way up there at 70 mph with 4.10s that is why I want the gearvenders Over Drive unit that takes place of the tail shaft it makes the 3 speed a 6 speed I think it is kinda like what they put on the vettes 4+3 back in 84

Hmm.... To my understanding the GVO is really a gear splitter. You do realize a TH400 is a 3 speed and not 4 right? Beyond that, it would technically give you 6 available ratios. The most important one being 3rd gear being a 1:1 ratio, being split to a .50:1.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

opps hit the wrong key yes I know the th400 is a 3 speed so if it makes it a .50:1 I think the t56 is .52:1 right so it would run lower rpms right

FWIW you wont see the difference between a .50:1 and .52:1 OD...maybe 50-100 rpm if it's that much.
Injuneer Fred is the only 1 that i know of that has a GV.
Im keeping the 4l60e (soon to be a transbraked 700r4) untill we find out how much it wont take.

I had 3.73 and a 700R4 with my first setup and didnt like the rpms at 70 so I know I wont like it with 4.10s that is why I am looking into the gear venders od unit because I think it will put me pretty close to my 6 speeds od wich is about 2100 at 70mph and I just dont trust the trans to hold I know they hold up good but when they go most guys replace them with turbo 400s but they lose there od that is why I want to learn more about the od unti... how it holds up and if people who are running them like them before I dicied to sell my t56 ...

I have all of the above, a ten second NA car with a Hughes TBraked 400 and a GV. Love it, I drive the car 48 miles one way with air conditioning to the track, have some fun, then go home without "buzzing" to death.

I have yet to use the brake as the suspension isnt sorted out to my satisfaction yet.

The Gear Vendor only comes in one O/D ratio, and that is 0.78:1. Yes, that turns a 4.10 rear into the equivalent of a 3.20.

I run 4.10s' and a TH400. In 3rd gear (1:1) I was turning 3,950rpm at 70mph. That's with 25.66" street tires, and allowing for convertor slip (non-locking). Switching the GV on drops it to 3,100rpm at 70mph.

On the track, I use 28" QTP's.

Yes, in theory you can use the GV to "split" the gears.... in effect:

1 - 2.48
1 O/D - 1.93
2 - 1.48
2 O/D 1.15
3 - 1.00
3 O/D - 0.78

Could you coordinate the shifter and the GV under race conditions??... I haven't tried it. I plan to use the GV for a 4th gear, since I'm approaching redline at 130mph in 3rd. I bought it from George Baxter, and he used it successfully for that purpose at levels in excess of 1,000HP.

in the book I got on them it says that all you have to do is hit a button and it ****s to the spliter I dont know how long it takes to shift or anything but they say they are good to 1200 hp which should be more that enought for me do you guys think I should go with this setup or just stay with the t56 will it last... I could put 3.73 and go with the 4L80E art car makes a pretty good one dont they?

Where can you get one of these units and how much is it? Maybe we can get a GP going on them. I'd love to be able to but a OD unit on, would make road trips a little nicer.

Unfortunately, a new unit costs close to $2,500. Getting one "used" was a bargain by comparison, but I don't think you will find many of them out there.

Yup overdrive on my TH400 isn't worth that much to me. I'd be willing to part with $1000 for one, but thats about it. I don't drive my car enough to care if it only gets 10mpg
