Post Harness rewebbing???

I just noticed the two year limit on my Simpson 5-point harness expired last month. I understand the harness can be rewebbed for another 2-years of use. Does it have to go back to Simpson? Any idea how much it costs?

Thanks.

You can try to get them rewebbed from Simpson but you might be SOL.

Simpson won't reweb any of their harnesses any more (still no comfirmed reports) and no other manufacture will reweb anyone elses harness.

Sell the expired SFI harness to a circle track racer and buy a new one.

I have found it is just cheaper and easier to get a new set of G-Force or RCI ($59.99) then even screw with the rewebbing. I have ALWAYS hated that rule. Five years or even four would be more acceptable!

At present it cost $0.09 a day to even own the damn things

i noticed in those other posts the people are really bitchy about having to update the belts. maybe when i get my cam back ill take some pics of my current belts for you guys. i have only used them for about 5 months, but with my car seeing daily driver use during that time, they are already fraying along the edges where the adjusters are. i would think after one full year of use i wouldnt feel safe hitting a wall head on with how frayed the belt will be by then, much less 2 years of use. i know most of you guys dont use your belts anywhere near as much as me, but they have to make the rules to keep EVERYBODY safe.

The rule should say "5 years or if the belts are showing any signs of wear". 30 year old 12 second cars only need the factory seat belts and I'd rather have a 5 year old 5 point harness holding me in than a 30 year old seat belt.

I can see in places like Califonia or Florida where they can race 12 months of the year, a belt that's 2 years old can start looking tattered.

I have a 5 month race season (If I'm lucky). After 2 years my belts still look new but I still have to change them because of the NHRA rule.

I sold my last old set to someone who sand drags for $50 which is the typical going rate for expired belts and bought a new set for $110 (Canadian prices). He was quite happy with the deal and said they looked new.

We can complain all we want but the way things are going, NHRA will never change the current rule.

It's always amazing that updated 5 pt harnesses went "bad" after 2 years but my 35 year old Nova can use its original 35 yr old belts. Go figure.
And you can always sell your old harnesses to any of the street rod or dune buggy guys. At least it'll offset some of the cost of replacements.

Thanks for the feedback.

I sent Simpson an e-mail... hopefully they will reply after the holiday.

My alternative would be to move the current harness to the passenger seat (the clips are already on the cross-bar) and buy a new one for the driver's seat. Problem is I started with the Camlock, and they are $170 at Summit or JEG's. The current one looks like new.

I got the original when my roll-bar was installed, from the guy that installed the bar. The bar was installed in January 2001, but the d@mn harness was punched "August 2000". I guess there is some advantage in buying where you can look at the manufacture date, and at least get close to the full 2 years out of it.

Hey Fred, talking with a M&R dealer 6 years ago he said it was easier just to buy new belts because of the length in time it would take to ship them, have them reweb them and then get them back and it would almost be the same price as a new set. So we have been buying a new set every two years.

Fred..
just have them rewebbed..
send them back to the manufacturer..
it's only 1/2 the cost and the good ones
like Crowe will just send you a new set..
still at 1/2 the cost

I've allways rewebed my Simp's. I send them in the first of the year and get back a Feb date, one time I got a March date.
I hate the rule also, but if you'll look at a touring pro car, the equipment can start looking shabby after two years.
