Post Turbo 400 going in, need driveshaft info..

I need to get a driveshaft made. How long were some of you other guys driveshafts? I have a moser 9in and will be putting in a TH400 in about a week. Also, what u-joints are you running? If you are running spicer joints, do you have the part numbers? What did you guys do about the idle in park? I know the computer compensates for load in drive. What is it going to do now? Any more info will be greatly apreciated.

Thanks.

I have a driveshaft for sale. Mark Williams #39800 3" chrome moly, with #39004 TH400 yoke, solid 1350 Spicers. It was used briefly with my TH400/Strange 12-bolt setup, so the length may not be correct for the 9-inch.. not sure. I replaced it only because I needed a much shorter shaft when I added the Gear Vendor, and a buddy of mine had a spare avaiable. If you are interested, e-mail me.

This DS cost over $600 with shipping. Sell for $450 firm + shipping. Buyer responsible for verifying required length.

If your not sure how long the shaft needs to be, measure it. Put the yoke in the trans, push it in all the way, then pull it back 3/4 to 1" (for suspension movement). Then measure from the center of the bearing cap on the u-joint, to the center of the bearing cap on the rear u-joint. Give that number to any driveshaft company, along with what type yoke and rearend you are using, and they should be able to whip one up. Make sure the car is at ride height when you take these measurements!!

The only way to be absolutely sure is to put the trans in, then measure the exact length you need. Not a good idea to work the other way around.

That said, let me tell you what I have seen in the past. When I was running a T56 with Strange 12-bolt, I bought a 3" Mark Williams chrome moly DS that was about 1/2" shorter than a stock 4th Gen V8 DS. That provided the recommended 3/4 - 1" clearance on the output shaft. I sold that DS to a buddy with a 9-inch Moser in a 99 SS, with a T56. He used the DS I sold him, but told me he thought is should have been about 1/2" longer, because the lower pinion centerline of the 9-inch requires a slightly longer shaft. So, appears a 9-inch requires a shaft about 1/2" longer than a 12-bolt.

I am currently going to sell him my TH400-to-Strange 12-bolt DS. It is 43.5" from centerline of u-joint to u-joint, with a 5-7/8" TH400 yoke, so the overall length is 49-3/8". That should be 1/2" shorter than what you need (and maybe 1/2" shorter than what he needs), assuming your car is assembled to roughly the same tolerances as mine, and that my buddy's 99 SS was truely representative of the typical 4th Gen.

But I think you can see, unless you have someone with a TH400 and a Moser 9-inch, it is only a guess, and even then I wouldn't trust the measurements without checking them on my specific car.
