1996 z

1996 z
I have a 1996 z with a 1995 engine in it
If I drive the car 45mph and over approximately and release the gas the car acts like a stick that is going to fast for the gear its in and the engine starts to slow the car down like when you down shift. Any one have any ideas?
The only other thing I can add is when I took the tranny pan off to change the filter and fluid I found a rag in the pan where the filter would have been
(FYI) I do not have the crank position sensor (95 did not have one) that the 96 would and its just unplugged (thats another project.) Just making sure that would not have anything do do with it.
Thanks for any help

Re: 1996 z
What year is the trans? PCM still 96?
Crank position sensor is only there for misfire detection. Not causing anything.
Sounds like you are describing engine braking.... or are you indicating the trans is downshifting itself to a lower gear, producing an irregular degree of engine braking for an automatic? Or possibly the converter is not unlocking.

Re: 1996 z
I'll try again.... what year is the trans? A 95 4L60E is not compatible with a 96 PCM. Lockup mechanisms are different.
Just because is doesn't unlock when you let up on the throttle doesn't mean it never unlocks.

Re: 1996 z
Don't know the part numbers, but the differences are in the 3-2 downshift strategy.
LTXTECH Forums - 4L60E-Year-Differences
I would scan the PCM for codes. The tranny codes don't turn on the SES light.

Re: 1996 z
I do need to clarify. I said 45 but that is when I noticed it most of the time. But on more test drive it seems to do it in all gears Its just not as noticeable at lower speeds. not sure what is going on.
If its a 96 trans what could it be.
if its the 95 (with the engine) what are solutions?
I do a lot of my own work but some I do depend on others (like getting codes)
I know not having the crank sensor is not an issue BUT.. I do seem to also be having codes getting kicked out correctly (according to the one person I am using at this moment for the codes) code reader on the way..
