700R4/4L06? Strong Trans?

Just curious as I have been reading up on my 93. IS the 700R4 and 4L06 the same thing? Are they notorious for being real heavy duty trans that can take a beating? is a 700R4 stronger then a 4L06-E? Or some but w/ electronic controlled? I just want to know before I go off beating on my trans, if it will hold up.

It's essentially the same transmission minus the electronics of the 4L60E. (that's why they call it 4L60)

It depends on how much horsepower, mileage, etc you have on it, but great strength and durability isn't something they're known for.

While this does belong in the tranny forum. Im gonna go ahead and post my remarks, I agree with what was previously said by Madwolf.

My tranny did not last past 120K. They've been known to fail sub-100K miles if that gives you any kind of indication. However you can get a rebuild for pretty cheap if you look for someone in your area, start saving that way when you pull the tranny for the rebuild you can drop in a shift kit, and a stall. Also don't go cheap on the tranny parts.

Don't go with a shabbie rebuilt one. Most trannie rebuilders don't know the weak points. Get one built by someone like Art Carr, GW, Pro-built. Do a search and you can get some good answers to your question. A stock rebuild from your local trannie shop will not last more then a year. They don't fix the weak points that have worn out in that 100,000 miles.

Are firm shifts a sign its going out? It never miss's a gear or slips (knock on wood). Gives me a nice kick when I put it in "D" and a hard/firm shift from 1-2, but thats about it, the 2-3 3-4 are perfect.

umm I dont know if it has a shift kit or tuning, I have only had the car for about 5 months. Trans perfom buttons were only 94+ w/ the 4L06-E (since the pc can change the shift points). Ive noticed that say I go on the expressway home from work (20 minutes) going 80mph+, and get off. The trans seems to shift smoother or it may just be tha tit feels that way because i was on the expressway for so long). Possibly the trans is getting warmed up real good? I dont know a lot about auto trans.

I just changed my rear end fluid last weekend w/ posi additive. I know my u-joints are prolly bad cuz I can hear them clunk everyonce in a while. Could u-joints cause hard shifts?

No u-joint don't cause hard shift points. Now they will make noise going into gear.

Re: 700R4/4L06? Strong Trans?

Hard shifts is better than soft shifts. Think about it, if the shifts are soft, that means that the parts that all move and grind on eachother are doing it slowly... if you have nice firm hard shifts that means that everything is movin faster and less friction is happening between parts.

Id say the 700R4 is a very strong trans, A LOT better than a 4L60 or 4L60E, i know plenty of people that use a 700R4 when they get huge stalls (4800 rpm) and heads cam work because it is heavy duty, that and there is no overdrive, good old 3 spd.

How is a 700R4 stronger than a 4L60 when it's the same transmission?

Hard, "bang" shifts (especially at part throttle) can be just as bad on your tranny...you want a firm, quick shift.
