Have a problem

3rd and 4th gear just went out of my tranny. Does anyone know who makes a better rebuild kit, b&m, transgo, etc. Also where can I find information/pictures on how to rebuild it?

you may want to try the drivetrain section, also if you are not familiar with rebuilding a tranny then I would suggest having it built professionally...

I just talked to a friend and he said it could be a bad silinoid. If it is, would it explain why my fluid smells burnt and it don't catch third gear until 5500 rpm or is it just junk?

The clutch pack most likely went out. If you lose two consecutive gears like 3 and 4, then its usually a pack. If you lose like 2 and 4, its a band.

It is not a solenoid. They hardly ever go bad on these cars anyways. Burnt smell is always an indicator that something major broke. Solenoids would not make a burning smell. Solenoids don't "catch" gears either at 5500 rpm or any rpm. They just engage and tell the trans to shift. A gear that won't catch until a certain rpm is usually a clutch pack or band. Time for a rebuild.

That depends on a lot of variables, som go out behind a fully stock motor while others last longer behind some mods, but also when built right they would be no different then a well built 350 since it shares a lot of the same internals. Read the sticky's at the top of the drivetrain section for mor info...

More than most people give them credit for...but...only if it's built right.

Save yourself ALOT of aggrivation. Have someone who knows about 4L60E's build it for you. If you use a generic transmission builder, you'll probably end up spending more in the long run. These are very tempramental transmissions. Building one properly takes more than just throwing a bunch of new parts in it. There are many many little tips and tricks that we've learned over the years about what these transmissions need to survive.

Thanks,
Frank

How hard is it to install a 700r4 with a ratchet shifter?
Would I have to have the computer tuned?

you would be much happier with the 4l60e. transgo make one of the best shift improvers i have ever installed. most local rebuilders just rebuild and don't understand how to make a performance transmission other than putting a shift kit in and letting it go.
