possible Transmission problem?

Hi there, I'm driving a 1997 Chevy camaro v6 3.8 coupe, i felt something might be wrong with my car whenever I was driving, so getting into my driveway i put it in park *automatic transmission by the way* an revved it, around 4,000 RPM it'll kind of kick off and drop, I found this kind of odd so i floored it to see if i could get it to redline, everytime it hit 4,000 rpm its like it would kick off back to around 3,500 rpm and try to get back up there,

finally after finishing I put it in reverse found a nice open spot dropped it into 1st gear and was easily able to hit almost redline *note it also shifted*

I'm not sure if there is anything wrong but i've never had this happen to me before.

Thanks
