Rear end noise

Hey, I have a noise coming from my rear end, suprise suprise.

Its the stock 10 bolt, limited slip, with stock 3.23 gears.
It makes this noise that sounds like a muffled rattle, kind of like something bouncing around in a box.
It will ONLY make this noise when I let off the gas at speed between 15-45, and sometimes it is louder when going around a turn, especially a sharp one. It does this some of the time, but not all of the time.

It has done this since I got it a year ago with 43K miles and has not gotten any worse now that it has 54K miles. And I don't abuse her, I've been to the drag strip 3 times running street tires.
I plan to drive the wheels off of this car and was wondering if I should save up for a 12 bolt?

You will find a LOT of probable reasons, but most will say don't worry about it if it's not getting worse.
I did HELP! mine by changing the rear end lube and installing the friction modifier with the new oil. Not asying it will sove your problem.I found that my 2000 has a torsen or gov lock limited slip which works opposite as the regular one, when wheels jacked up and spun. I had never heard of this type L/S before.
Mine still clunks a little, slow speeds and slight turns.
Good luck and read the rear end posts, which will really confuse you.

you might want to change the rear diff fluid first before you go spend alot of money on the rear end. i change mine every spring and fall and i still had to get the rear end re-built to get rid of the noise.

That's a pretty common noise with torsen limited slip differentials. I've had the same noise comming from my rear end since I got it and it has 62k miles on it, and I haven't noticed any problems. Good luck.

p.s. It did get quieter after changing diff oil and adding the gm friction modifier (even though it is designed for clutch type l.s. and the torsen is not a clutch type).

It should be a torsen.

The additive eliminates clutch plate or cone chatter in most diffs. but in Torsens the gears tend to chatter witout it so that is why it is still recommended.
