Question Trans shifting slow between P, R and D

Recently purchased a 98' Z28. When I shift from "P" into "R" or "D" car seems to take forever (approx. 3 seconds) to go into gear. There are no other symptoms as transmission seems to function properly otherwise.

Is this normal for the LS1 cars as it does not do this on my 95" Z.

Thanks, Weja

too much clearance in the forward and reverse clutches...transmission is on it's way out.

Check the fluid level and color/smell. Fluid could be burnt.

thats just the way it is...

I've had a A4 in my LT1 and an A4 in my LS1 they both do the same thing... it takes a few seconds for it to engage... its normal...

even in the A4 in my friends LT1, and the A4 in my ex gf 02 v6

It's definitely not normal. I've been building automatics for over 16 years. Only an auto with clutch clearance / pressure problems has a delayed engagement.

perhaps my experiance is different then his, but generally on the 4L60-e it generally from when you shift the car to drive, and the time when the gear accually engages and the car lurches forward is about 2-3 seconds...

Kinda hard to pinpoint it. I've seen transmissions last a long time after an initial delay problem. Some go pretty rapidly.

I was also assuming you've checked the fluid level. Low fluid will also cause a delay.

ive also heard a dirty trans filter can cause that, but as a sidenote my car also did that before the trans went out.. apparently its the first sign, cause a few months later it started slipping on the 2-3 shift.. then the 1-2.. then it died. now its all fixed (finally took a LONG time to get right, save urself the trouble when it does go and get it done by someone that knows the 4l60e) anyway now that mines rebuilt and right it doesnt even take a second to shift from P to R or D, instantly everytime.

Interesting. My car did this when I first purchased it. Had 77k on it maybe? I had it rebuilt twice since then. 20k later

Hey I must agree with some others this is not normal... My original Tranny didn't have a problem when I got it with only 28K pampered old woman miles on it. But after a few years or so of racing it and putting a about 40K more miles on it it started doing this, and also was leaking out of the pump housing, after a little more time it started slipping... I sent it off to be rebuilt and haven't had the problem since...

Definitly not a normal occurance, maybe those cars you are experiancing this with have been abused or had some strange pressure issues??? Maybe altitude or temp could play a role in fluid thickness and causing a peassure loss, where are you located?
