Did you happen to see this part in the first paragraph?
Even if I put it into 1st gear manually and take it up to about 4K and let off, the RPM drops back to idle as if I had shifted into neutral or pushed in the clutch.
Come on now, I'm not THAT stupid.

At least you still have all your gears for the moment.
My tranny tossed its cookies on second gear, 1,3,4 work no second.
I had it rebuilt and its golden now.
It is kinda expensive but once the new tranny is in with a shift kit and a stall you will fall in love with your car all over again.

dude... your tranny is supposed to do that.. i doesnt stay at 4k rpms..
thats the way every auto i have driven has worked.. go to a flat part of road and hit 50.. let off the gas.. you will slow down.. maybe 1 mph every 1-2 seconds.. thats just how it is man...

You're kidding me right? LMFAO!
Um, dude, you're wrong. Sorry man but that is most definitely not the way it is. There should be "engine braking" when you let off the gas. If I manually put the car into 1st gear take it up to 5K and let off, the car should NOT imediately drop back to idle and coast. Do you think that they would build it that way and put all that extra stress on the brakes? LOL. Riiight.
Anyway, it should do the same as a manual car would do if you let off the gas and did not push in the clutch.
