new to exhaust systems, questions
hi all
im pretty new to exhaust systems and engine modding all together. i just recently purchased a 94 z28 and had a bunch of work done.
the engine was leaking oil so i had my front and rear seals replaced, oil pan and oil pan gasket replaced as well.
then my tranny went out so its going through a rebuild which ill be getting my car back tomorow.
i prob should have taken my time looking for a car that didnt have problems but once i drove it, i fell in love, like im sure most of you did too =)
anywho on to the point, I honestly dont know the first thing about exhaust systems but I have an idea kind of, which is probably way off.
i know the point of them is to free up more air to the engine therefore increasing horsepower. i dont know if it affects gas milage at all?
my main question here is what would be a nice exhaust setup? I cant really afford to spend like $600 or more on an exhaust system as theres more i want to do to my car. I was thinking around the 400-450 range, 500 max.
I want my car to have a nice purr at an idle but also sound really loud and mean at high rpms, but i dont want one of those exhaust systems that makes your car sound like a dumptruck lol if you know what i mean.
sorry im beating around the bush. what is an afforable exhaust system that sounds nice and gives the most hp for the buck?
Thanks in advance
Kenny

not a bad price at all. is there anything i need to be on the lookout for when purchasing exhaust systems..or things i need to keep in mind? like i said im all new to this.
and with the magnaflow, whats the estimated hp gain?
EDIT: sorry I forgot to add. Do these systems come with everything you need? I honestly dont know all the parts to the exhaust. All i know is the y-pipe, the catback and tips.

stock manifolds. I know I need to get headers in order to have a full exhaust, that will come last...I'm not sure what kind of headers i want right now either.
So its basically down to the magnaflow or SLP exhaust...both decently priced...any pros or cons?

I'm in the military and my annual physicals clearly show that I have hearing loss in my right ear from driving a car with the loudmouth for 4 years.
personally, I'd go for the magnaflow, but as you can see I'm a little biased against the loudmouth.

any catback should come with all parts and hardware needed to install it.
probably can do it yourself, but you may want to find someone to help.
both of those exhausts are good setups. the magnaflow is tamer sounding at idle and mild throttle...but still nice and throaty. the LM will be louder all together.
both will yeild about the same power...say 12-15hp at the wheels.
if you plan to do headers later on....i would suggest the magnaflow...
check Ebay for the magnaflow, some company on there use to sell them CHEAP...brand new.

I have always loved the way a GMMG sounds. Especially with LT's no cats, and a cam. They are very expensive brand new, but this may be your lucky day. I have a used GMMG cat back for sale. Oh, did I mention I also have some LT's and a ORY for sale also??!! PM me.

Here is what a GMMG with LT's, no cats and a cam sounds like! BTW, I bought that car and am going next weekend to pick it up!

I'm going to go a different direction on this one... How about an electronic cutout? For a little over $200 plus probably $50 at most to have it welded on you will have the best of both worlds. You can close it when you need the car to be quiet or uncap it and get much better exhaust flow than any catback you're going to find. It's a little loud for most people with it fully open, but it's really not that bad if you have cats and stock manifolds...

W/exception of Flowmaster and Spintech, all the gains for a catback will be about the same. The rest is based on materials used and your taste.
You need to decide what tone and amount of rasp you like, how loud you want it, how much you want to spend, and what materials you want it made of.
Personally, I say buy used.

SLP is gonna flow better than Magnaflow ... Magnaflow is chambered ... SLP is a resonator, magnaflow is too high pitches for my taste, the SLP is too loud, and GMMG is WAY overpriced. I put Hooker Aerochamber on my car, never regreted it from the get-go. AWESOME SOUND!
